Former Texas Rep. Maya Flores Hospitalized Hours After Launching 2026 Campaign

Hours after former U.S. Rep. Maya Flores announced plans to run for Congress again in 2026, her campaign said she was hospitalized for a “sudden health scare” and is now recovering.

“During this challenging time, we humbly ask for your prayers and support,” the Texas Republican’s campaign wrote on X on Tuesday, April 15. “We pray that Mayra will return stronger than ever, ready to continue her unwavering commitment to serving our country.”

That evening, the campaign shared another update, in which they said Flores was “fully recovering and feeling stronger than ever.”

“Earlier today, Mayra Flores faced a sudden health scare, but thanks to the incredible care she received and the support of her loved ones, she is now fully recovering and feeling stronger than ever,” the update read. “While she is taking time to recover, her passion for serving TX-28 has not slowed down one bit. Mayra will be back on the campaign trail soon—stronger than ever and ready to fight for the people of South Texas.”

When reached for further comment on Wednesday, Flores’ campaign provided the same update to PEOPLE.

Flores, 39, became the first Mexican-born congresswoman to serve in the U.S. when she won a special election in 2022 to represent Texas’ 34th congressional district. She lost her bid for a full term during the November 2022 midterm elections and unsuccessfully ran again in 2024.

Earlier on Tuesday, Flores launched her 2026 campaign for Texas’ 28th district. She is hoping to unseat longtime Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, who has represented the district since 2005.

Cuellar, 69, won reelection in 2024 after he and his wife were indicted on federal money laundering, bribery and conspiracy charges for allegedly accepting $600,000 in bribes from an Azerbaijan energy company and a Mexican commercial bank, per the Associated Press. Cuellar said he and his wife are innocent.

“Rep. Cuellar remains fully focused on his work in Congress and steadfast in his commitment to serving the people of TX-28,” Cuellar’s campaign told ABC News.

The 28th district includes parts of San Antonio and stretches to the U.S.-Mexico border.
