Franklin Jonas and Harper Grace Debate Dating Red Flags, Share How Love Lives Influenced Song ‘IDK’ (Exclusive)

Franklin Jonas and Harper Grace are no strangers to the difficulties of dating in your 20s — and the two rising singer-songwriters used their real-life experiences to inspire their new song “IDK.”

“We walked in [to the studio] and talked for two hours about our lives [and] what we were going through,” Franklin, 24, told Us Weekly exclusively following the duo’s performance at JonasCon on Sunday, March 23. “[We both] brought in some references and had the idea to do a dialogue in a relationship as things are confusing. ‘Where are things gonna go? Is this good? Is this bad? Should we keep trying? Should we not? Maybe I will, maybe I won’t.’ And from there, it just became what the song is.”

Franklin and Harper Grace, 23, released “IDK” on Friday, March 21, ahead of the fan convention headlined by the Jonas Brothers. (Franklin is the younger brother of the music trio consisting of Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas.)

“It’s been so beautiful and organic the way that it’s all played out, being the single that we released together just so happens to be released the same weekend of JonasCon, and Franklin invited me to perform it with him,” Harper Grace told Us. “I’ve talked to his family so much about just the fact that the Jonas fans are so iconic. They are so supportive with anything that the boys do.”

There’s something about the number 7 when it comes to rising singer-songwriters Mason Ramsey and Harper Grace — including the official release date for their duet, “Live Lonely,” which Us Weekly can exclusively debut. “I’m a big numbers girl,” Harper Grace, 23, told Us. “I’ve got a little number 7 tattoo on my arm, which […]

The duet investigates the uncertainty of a relationship, with the chorus culminating in a harmony between Franklin and Harper Grace: “Maybe I will (maybe I won’t) / Maybe we’ll find something that we don’t know.”

“Being in our 20s, I can say that it’s definitely a pivotal learning experience where relationships are hard,” Harper Grace said of the inspiration behind the song. “Nowadays, there’s so many outlets of meeting people — online apps, or whatever it is. Dating is just hard.”

She continued: “Everybody’s got their story. Everybody has that uncertainty of whether you are in love … It feels so relatable. And hearing that that’s also the feedback from other people, I’m like, ‘Well, that’s good.’ I’m glad I’m not the only one who has dating issues.”

Franklin — who has been dating his girlfriend, Anna Olson, since early 2022 — shared that he enjoyed the process of incorporating past experiences into “IDK.”

“I think [Harper Grace] put it best,” he told Us. “We found a moment to be able to talk about what we’ve been through and tried to craft a little story out of it. It’s all in the song.”

They’ve been the heartbreaker in every relationship. Never the dumpee, always the dumper

Franklin: You know what? Green flag. Give ‘em a chance.

Harper Grace: I mean, maybe a green flag if they know what they want.

Franklin: Yes, but you never know. The joke was that you could change them. That’s the goal.

Harper Grace: What if it’s like they’re very confident in what they want and they’re like, “You’re done.”

Franklin: Oh yeah. High standards are great. Yeah. You’ve convinced me.

Harper Grace: High standards. It could be a green flag. He was joking, but I think it’s a green flag now.

They have no social media

Harper Grace: Green flag.

Franklin: Super green flag. Or they could be a serial killer.

Harper Grace: It could be beige. We could say beige flag. Just precautions. Just make sure you do a little background check and then you should be good to go.

They say country music isn’t their vibe

Harper Grace: Major red flag.

Franklin: Oh, I disagree. Green flag because they know what they want. They know what they like, and who knows, maybe they have great [taste], there’s a lot of other genres. There’s a lot of other places you could spend your time listening. Maybe they like podcasts.

Harper Grace: That’s true. See, he’s on the keeping-it-positive side. I need to learn that. I’m working on open-mindedness.

They’re from New Jersey

Franklin: Oh super green flag. Jerz!

Harper Grace: Green flag.

Franklin: It doesn’t matter, north, south, central [Jersey]. Controversial whether [central] exists or not, but it’s a green flag all the way.

They’ve never had a relationship that lasted more than six months

Franklin: I think that goes back to the first one. I think it could be a green flag. I’m just going to call it beige.

Harper Grace: I say beige as well.

They’re still close to their ex as “friends”

Franklin: I don’t know. It depends on the relationship. I’m going to say beige because I know people who have super platonic, super bud vibes, and you move on.

Harper Grace: If it ends nice and you guys can still be friends, I feel like that’s pretty mature.

Franklin: You can also end badly and have a reconciliation. There’s lots of ways. People change.

Harper Grace: That’s very true. I’d also say beige as well. I think it depends on the situation. Happy medium, but if it’s a concern…

Franklin: Yeah, you’re welcome to have insecurities about that.

They live in cowboy boots

Harper Grace: I love a man in cowboy boots. I say green flag.

Franklin: Seeing as I live in L.A. I’m going to say red flag because it’s a bit performative where I live.

Harper Grace: Oh, that makes sense.

It’s been over two decades since Miranda Lambert stole America’s heart with her stint on the singing competition Nashville Star. Since then, she’s become one of the most powerful players in the country music scene thanks to her undeniable talent, sassy confidence and penchant for keeping it real. “I’m lucky,” Lambert exclusively shares in the […]

They ask for the password for your phone

Franklin: Oof. If they just ask for it out of the blue, then that would give me pause. I’m going to say red on that one. If it’s like, “Oh, check how far away the Uber is. Here’s my password,” that to me is fine, but if they’re like, “I need it. Give it to me,” that’s probably not. It’s passed a line.

Harper Grace: It’s a little bit of a red flag.

They instantly reply to your messages

Franklin: Super green flag.

Harper Grace: Green flag. I love it when we text back and forth.

Franklin: Yeah. I love it when people respond to me. I love when I can talk to the person I’m dating. That’s so nice. [Laughs] Yeah, I’m so bad at texting, so I appreciate it when someone responds right away. I actually love it when people double and triple text me. I’m so bad at responding that I need that because I’ll forget.

Harper Grace: Agree. That’s a major green flag.

They’ve never seen ‘Camp Rock’

Franklin: Ooh, it’s a great movie. The pure-to-heart cinephile that I am would tell me that’s a red flag.

Harper Grace: Definite red flag.

Franklin: Get an education.

Harper Grace: Camp Rock!

They hate sweet treats

Franklin: I mean, I don’t love a sweet treat, but it depends.

Harper Grace: That’s a beige flag because I feel like for the girl, she’s going to be like, “I want an ice cream,” and if the guy doesn’t want an ice cream, she no longer wants the ice cream. But also [I’m] independent. If I want the ice cream, I’m going to get the ice cream every once in a while.

Franklin: I love a savory snack. I’m going to say beige to vanilla bean of a flag.

They’re scared of rats

Franklin: Oh, super red flag on that. For me, personally, I love rats. Rats are awesome. I almost got a pet rat and my girlfriend wouldn’t let me.

Harper Grace: That’s OK.

They’re an only child

Franklin: Oh, that’s fine. I wouldn’t say it’s green or red, they’re just going to need more attention.

Harper Grace: I’m sure they’re great.

They have ghosted people in the past

Franklin: [singing] “I’ve been ghosting for the point of it.” I’m going to say a green flag on that. Give ‘em a chance. You can fix ‘em. You can change them.

Harper Grace: [singing] “Maybe you won’t. I don’t know.”

Franklin: [singing] “Maybe we’ll find some things that I don’t know.”

Harper Grace: True.

“IDK” is out now.
