Gabriel Macht Loves His ‘Anonymity’ Since Moving to Secret Location: ‘I Want to Be Invisible’ (Exclusive)

  • Gabriel Macht revealed to PEOPLE in January that his family had left the U.S. and was living in an undisclosed international destination
  • Fans were highly intrigued by the move — and the secrecy — which left the star baffled, he says
  • Despite promoting his new show Suits LA in the U.S., the actor says he’s still “absolutely in love with my anonymity” and has no plans to disclose where he’s been living with his wife Jacinda Barrett and their two kids

Gabriel Macht wants to go where nobody knows his name.

The Suits LA actor, who recently moved his family to an international location he keeps purposefully “under wraps,” loves the “anonymity” that living in a secret spot — and ditching his Harvey Specter suits — grants him, he tells PEOPLE.

Macht, 53, and his wife, actress Jacinda Barrett, previously decided to leave the United States with their two children — daughter Satine, 17, and son Luca, 10 — and are choosing to keep the location to themselves. The secrecy generated lots of interest — but that was never his intention.

“I didn’t want it to be a real big reaction,” Macht says. “I wanted it to be boring.”

Contrary to his wishes, however, the news was anything but. “People ask me,” he says, referring to the location of his move — but that doesn’t mean he answers.

“I am absolutely in love with my anonymity, and so when I’m working and I’ve got the suit on and someone wants to know something, I try my best to give a moment,” he says, “but when I’m not working, I don’t want to be known.”

“I want to be invisible and all that stuff,” Macht adds. “I just start thinking about my kids. I just don’t want them to be uncomfortable.”

The actor-producer first opened up about the decision to move abroad while chatting with PEOPLE in January.

“I got out of town and we’re exploring the world,” he said at the time, noting, “I don’t tell anybody where I live because I like to keep that under wraps.”

After Suits finished its nine-season run in 2019, Macht took a “long break” from acting to focus on his family. “Right before COVID, we wanted to take the kids out of school and homeschool them,” Macht told PEOPLE. “But then we got stuck and so we were in Manhattan. That just wasn’t doing it for us.”

Up until that point, he had spent “half of my life on the East Coast, half of my life on the West Coast,” and it was time for a change. “We decided to explore the world,” he said, “so we left.”

And, after returning to the United States to film Suits LA, the star grappled with some mixed feelings.

“It’s nice to be here. It’s bittersweet,” he told PEOPLE at the February premiere of the Suits spin-off.

Macht first met his wife Barrett — who is originally from Australia — in 2000 on a blind date, and they married in a private ceremony in 2004. The couple later welcomed Satine in 2007 and Luca in 2014.

The couple is relatively private, but he is open about Barrett and their kids being priority No. 1.

“I’m a family man. My relationships with my wife and my kids are my priorities,” he previously told New Zealand outlet Woman’s Day. “And I have the utmost confidence in my love for my family and I prioritize that.”
