George Clooney’s Bio for Broadway’s Good Night, and Good Luck Goes Viral: ‘Buckle Up’

  • George Clooney referenced his Broadway debut and prior stage experience in the official biography for his new show Good Night, and Good Luck
  • The Oscar-winning actor hasn’t appeared onstage in a role since 1986 when he appeared in the Chicago production of Vicious
  • He previously referred to the role as a “turning point” in his career

George Clooney’s Playbill biography from his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck is garnering some attention!

The 63-year-old Oscar winner’s production — from Tony Award-winning director David Cromer — officially opened at Winter Garden Theatre in New York City on April 3. This is Clooney’s first performance on a Broadway stage in nearly 40 years, a fact that he referenced in his official bio for the show.

“George’s last time in an Equity theatre was in June of 1986, a play called Vicious at Steppenwolf Theatre. He has never appeared on Broadway so…buckle up,” reads the Playbill.

Photos of the page have been shared by theatergoers online, many pointing out that the actor’s signature sense of humor is on display in the short paragraph. He also humbly did not list any of his illustrious accolades or screen credits, something actors typically include.

Clooney starred inVicious, a play about the life of Sid Vicious, in Los Angeles and later, at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre. His work in the play, as a male prostitute drug dealer, famously earned him his first agent and on-camera work.

Since then, Clooney has credited his performance in Vicious as a “turning point” for him professionally. In 2016, he told The New Yorker that it was “the first time I really felt like, ‘Okay, I’m in the right business. I shouldn’t be embarrassed about everything I do.’ ”

Interestingly, his Good Night, and Good Luck costar Clark Gregg has memories of seeing him in the performance.

“I saw a young actor whose name was George, in a play in Chicago in 1986, and he was wonderful,” Gregg told PEOPLE earlier this year. “Since we started rehearsing, he told me that was the only other play he’s ever done.”

In Good Night, and Good Luck, Clooney plays Edward R. Murrow. His friend and fellow ER alum Anthony Edwards told PEOPLE on opening night that the role was one Clooney had wanted “for so many years.”

The show is an adaptation of the 2005 film of the same name, which Clooney directed and co-wrote. It centers on Edward R, Murrow, a famed CBS journalist responsible for the 1954 exposé on Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

He also starred in the political drama as Fred W. Friendly, a role that is now played by Glenn Fleshler on Broadway.

For his new part, Clooney pulled off a dramatic transformation and turned back time by coloring his salt-and-pepper hair dark.
