Has AI infiltrated the cast of Ginny & Georgia? Fans think so.
After season 3 was released on June 5, viewers took to social media to share their suspicions about the character Zion Miller (Nathan Mitchell), theorizing that his seemingly “too perfect” facial features are actually the result of AI.
“You look CGI, AI, or out of a video game this season,” one person commented on Mitchell’s June 9 Instagram post featuring a photo of Zion.
Another user added, “Is it just me or Zion (respectfully) is so good looking he just doesn’t seem like a real person 😂😂 some scenes literally look like AI.”
“You guys, be so real with me. How is this character not AI?” a fan on TikTok said in a video showcasing a scene where Zion chatted on the phone while making dinner. At one point, his mouth seemingly glitched, further feeding into the theory that the character wasn’t played by a real human. However, some users pointed out that the glitch was likely a result of the filter the video’s creator used.
“He looked so fake this season, I thought I was trippin’!” someone commented on the clip.
“The whole time I was like, ‘Why is he in a cartoon!?!?’”
Many fans agreed that Zion’s skin looked “too smooth” to be real. Meanwhile, others compared him to animated characters from Grand Theft Auto and The Polar Express.
While Mitchell, 36, has not addressed the AI comments, he is a very real Canadian actor who has appeared in other projects dating back to 2007, including Aliens in America, Arrow, The Tomorrow People, Timeless, iZombie, Supernatural, The Boys and more.
Among the comments on the TikTok video was one fan who pointed out, “If they did AI with Zion, why can’t they make Austin look like he’s still 10?”
Many viewers have called for the recasting of Diesel La Torraca, who plays Austin Miller in Ginny & Georgia, as he is now 14 years old and still playing a 9-year-old character. Fans found it difficult to suspend their disbelief for the character due to the growth spurt that La Torraca experienced while filming season 3.
“Playing a 9-year-old for six years when you are growing … I’ve grown with him, but I’ve also kind of departed from him because I was 8 when we started [filming season 1 in 2019], now I’m 14,” La Torraca recently told Teen Vogue. “There are a lot of differences in the way that he would move and act and speak. I have to heighten my voice register, slouch a little bit [to] feel like I’m actually a shy, insecure 9-year-old.”
Despite fan concerns about the age difference between La Torraca and his character, series creator Sarah Lampert exclusively told Us Weekly that there are no plans to recast him ahead of season 4.
“Anyone who works on the show will tell you I am fastidious about the details. I am just specific with so many things. Then things like Diesel growing five years [older], I’m like, ‘Whatever.’ Because you can’t control it,” Lampert said. “We can’t recast. Diesel is Austin.”
Lampert added that the show will “really lean into” La Torraca being a real-life teenager in season 4.
“There are a few jokes we’re planning to make. We’re aware that he’s growing up and that helps us,” she continued. “Honestly, it serves us because now he’s really a part of the family in a way that he wasn’t before. He was just a little kid. Now with everything we put him through in season 3 and having him enter season 4 as a preteen, he’s entering the chat in a way that he hasn’t before.”
Ginny & Georgia is currently streaming on Netflix.
