In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, season 3 of Ginny & Georgia reunited Raymond Ablack with one of his Degrassi: The Next Generation costars — but how did that onscreen cameo happen?
During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Ablack, 35, addressed Annie Clark‘s guest spot as Abby’s father’s girlfriend, which led to a scene at his character Joe’s Blue Farm Cafe.
“That was a great day. Annie came on — and I really adore her. She’s terrific,” Ablack recalled. “She was really funny and terrific in that scene at the dining table and it was nice to reunite with her. I saw her in the makeup trailer and then on set.”
Even though Ablack and Clark, 32, didn’t speak during the scene, he was still thrilled by the moment, adding, “With the way that scene went, I was in the background for much of it. So oftentimes I can just skirt around the counter and go look right on the camera and see her closeups. I just felt a weird pride for where she and I have both come since those days.”

Degrassi, which was created in 1979, is a franchise centered around students at a fictional Canadian school who face numerous coming-of-age challenges including sex, teen pregnancy, bullying and more. Through reruns, the series developed a cult following, which paved the way for several spinoffs, including Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class.
Ablack notably played Sav from seasons 7 to 11, while Clark portrayed Fiona from seasons 9 to 12. Despite their characters not overlapping much on Degrassi, Ablack and Fiona still developed a friendship off screen.
“It must have been 10 years ago that we were [on the show] — more than that even. And now I’m watching this teenage girl that I grew up with — she’s a woman now — and we’re both still doing it,” Ablack noted to Us. “She was doing so great. That was really nice. I felt so great for both of us, but especially for her at that moment.”
The actor also clarified that he had nothing to do with Clark scoring the role on Ginny & Georgia. The Netflix series, which returned for season 3 on Thursday, June 5, follows a young single mother who moved her family to Wellsbury, Massachusetts, after running away from her past. In addition to Ablack, the show stars Brianne Howey, Antonia Gentry, Diesel La Torraca, Felix Mallard, Sara Waisglass and Scott Porter.

“I would never stop vouching for [my former Degrassi costars] and suggesting the actors and crew. Those were some of the best days of my life and greatest people in my life, but I don’t think they care about who I recommend,” Ablack quipped. “Annie got that based on her own tremendous talent and ability.”
Ablack would love to see more Degrassi cameos in the future.
“Everyone from Degrassi is capable and deserving of being on our show as well,” he added. “A funny note is back in the day we shot Degrassi on a [specific] street and one street away is where we shoot Ginny & Georgia. It’s years later and I’m only a block away. You’re experiencing some of the same life milestones with a new cast.”
