Gracie Abrams is clarifying how her relationship with Paul Mescal has impacted her creative process.
Abrams and the Oscar nominee, who have kept their relationship relatively private, have been dating since 2024. The Grammy-nominated artist, 36, previously opened up about her concerns that her love life would inadvertently impact her career.
“I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music,” Abrams told Vogue in June. “It freaked me out.”
In response to her June confession, she said fans were shocked, prompting her to question their reaction. “I’m like, ‘Are we on crack? Like, what the f—?’ ” she told Rolling Stone.
“That was my cue to be like, ‘Oh, remember why you don’t look [at social media]?’ ” she said, adding, “Run with it, circus.”

The singer explained that her concerns came because she had “far less experience” writing music when she was “filled with security and joy and love and safety.”
“And I was like, ‘Oh, s–t, how am I going to approach this?’ Or, you know, ‘How’s it going to impact the quantity of songs I write?’ And it’s had the most amazing effect on my writing,” she told the outlet. “It has given me the most amount of space to reflect on everything in my life. It has held a mirror to me in ways that I didn’t know a relationship with another person of any kind could.”
“It has given me all the perspective that I could have ever hoped for, on previous relationships, on my relationship with my family, on my friendships. It is the greatest gift, period,” the “That’s So True” singer added.
While their relationship has assisted her writing process, Mescal, 30, has also collaborated with the singer. “We’re a very musical household, and so there’s always something brewing,” she said, before explaining how the actor earned a credit on “Imaginary Friend,” a song on her latest album, Daughter from Hell.
“I started playing this guitar part — but we do that all the time. I feel lucky to be generally inspired by him as a person and by his brain. It’s the easiest thing to make stuff together,” she said.
She also celebrates Mescal’s “amazing” ability to prepare for his role as Paul McCartney in the forthcoming biopics about The Beatles. The Hamnet star taught himself to play bass with his left hand, like McCartney.
“He’s like an alien. I mean, he’s better at guitar backwards than I have been at guitar my whole life,” she told Rolling Stone.

While the couple has kept their relationship fairly private, she said on the New York Times’ Popcast that she doesn’t like “the feeling of hiding.”
“I also love privacy where it feels like the right thing,” Abrams explained in the June interview.
“That is a part of my life that brings me so much peace and joy,” she said. “I’m not going to pretend like that’s not true, but I also think it’s not like an open-door policy.”
