Grey’s Anatomy: Teddy Makes a Tearful Admission as She and Owen Navigate Their Open Marriage

Warning: this story contains spoilers from the April 3 episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

An open marriage pact led Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) down different paths.

On the April 3 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Teddy crossed paths with Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush) at a medical conference. Cass then offered to help with Miranda Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) presentation on training OB/GYN residents from states with abortion bans. She called the program “a beacon of hope” during these times, which impressed Teddy.

After Teddy told Cass that she “saved the day,” the pair shared yet another moment and Teddy asked, “Do you want to skip the afternoon lectures?”

“You said to let you know when I have figured it out and I have figured it out,” she said of the pair’s growing attraction, right before they were interrupted by Bailey.

Later, the pair began to hook up, but Teddy pumped the brakes, saying, “I feel like I’m cheating on my husband. Is this what it felt like when you first opened your marriage?”

“Our marriage was suffocating us, being with someone else felt like finally breathing fresh air,” Cass replied.

Teddy broke down in tears and admitted, “This is not gonna fix my marriage. I’m so sorry.”

Diving Into the Deep End

Owen took a different approach to their open marriage pact when his childhood friend Nora (Floriana Lima) returned to Grey Sloan Memorial with her pregnant pal Liz, who was frantic about doing the last minute preparations for their high school reunion.

Nora questioned if she should have taken Liz to another hospital after she previously tried to kiss Owen, but he called it an “above board” visit.

While the doctors were able to help Liz, they insisted she still needed rest and she told Nora to go in her place to make sure the reunion went off without a hitch.

Owen offered to go with her and revealed, “We’ve agreed that we can see other people.”

Later, Teddy texted Owen but he didn’t respond as he was hooking up with Nora.

A Change of Heart

After rekindling their relationship, Benson “Blue” Kwan’s (Harry Shum Jr.) ex-fiancée Molly (Dianne Doan) prepared to undergo an experimental surgery that would hopefully allow her to regain her memories.

Blue continued to have reservations about the operation and he confronted Molly’s boyfriend Dave after he showed up at the hospital. However, Dave surprised him, saying, “Molly hasn’t told you everything you need to know.”

He later explained that Molly struggled after the accident, saying, “She tried everything she could to get her memories back, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, Vietnamese herbs. Her parents said that she spent everything she had, and when none of it worked, she spiraled, not eating, not sleeping. They finally talked her into getting help.”

The information was a shock to Blue, but he insisted, “She picked me, get over it.”

After their conversation, Blue told Molly that the odds of the surgery working were “almost impossible.”  He also warned Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd) to not let Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) go “overboard” during the operation and after some hesitation, she agreed.

During surgery, Simone and Amelia didn’t see eye-to-eye about Molly’s risk of seizure. However, the patient was able to regain her memory when the brain was stimulated, but lost the images whenever it stopped. It turned out her memory was of Dave not Blue, but he insisted, “You don’t need to remember anything for us to have a future together.”

However, he had a change of heart when he learned that Molly had lied to him about telling her parents about the surgery and them being back together. He told her, “I think you know you’re on a slippery slope.”

“Are you only with me because you think it might help get your memory back?” he finally asked, to which she answered, “I don’t know.”

Simone later apologized to Amelia for “challenging” her, but Amelia knew that Blue was in her head and warned, “Your star may be on the rise, but that is not the same as having years of experience with hundreds of patients. Whatever you know about the patient’s family, their loved ones, you keep it out of my O.R. or you do not step foot inside.”

Getting Ready to Fight

Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), Ben Warren (Jason George) and Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) treated a patient named Allen, who was facing complications after receiving a third kidney transplant from his sister.

Allen later experienced pain and Lucas realized a clot was cutting off his blood supply, putting the kidney at risk. During surgery, the doctors realized the kidney was dead and he would need to go back on the transplant once he was in remission.

After Lucas stepped up in the O.R., he asked Nick if thought it was necessary for him to repeat his intern year. He said, “My surgical skills are as good as my classmates, but my career is gonna suffer because I tried to save a patient who was gonna die anyway.”

Nick advised him to talk to Richard about advice on how to persuade Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) to reverse her decision. However, Richard didn’t tell him what he wanted to hear, saying, “Once she makes up her mind about something, she needs a really good reason for her to change it. And you don’t have it.”
