Life got scary for Greyson Chance earlier this year.
In an emotional note shared to social media on April 18, the 27-year-old pop singer — who rose to viral fame in 2011 and notably appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show — revealed he recently suffered a collapsed lung.
Chance opened the statement by explaining he was set to release an album in 2024 before starting to “feel incredibly anxious” about the project. “I think I felt trapped in the genre of the record and claustrophobic in my life in general,” he wrote.
As a result, the musician chose to cancel various career plans and part ways with his management team. “I was determined to come into 2025 strong but then my lung collapsed,” he explained, “and I was all of a sudden coughing up blood wondering if I was going to be okay.”
“This is morbid but when I was sick all I could think about was the endless list of songs that would die on my hard drive if I didn’t make it through and how unfair that was,” added Chance. “I told myself that when I was better all of my focus should go back towards what I believe I do best as an artist: make music with no supervision, create the visuals with my friends, be gay as hell with it, and find joy wherever I can.”
He recalled feeling a similar sense of freedom while crafting 2019’s Portraits album, noting that its success led him to purchase a house and “still pays for it to this day.”
Regarding a new project, Chance told fans, “So as of now I have around 8 songs for a new album that I love wholeheartedly and I’m in talks with a label who seems to really believe in it.”
The performer also explained he’s “booked some shows for this year” and has been enjoying the creative planning process.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is I really have no idea what the hell I’m doing but honestly do any of us? All I know is I’m back to believing in myself again and trusting my instinct that feels good,” wrote Chance, whose last album Palladium was released in 2022.
