Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t realize the “bad skin” Timothée Chalamet had while filming Marty Supreme was actually professionally crafted makeup, according to Robert Downey Jr.
Chalamet, 30, and Downey Jr., 60, took part in a Q&A for the film at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles on Jan. 14. At one point, Downey Jr. poked fun at his Marvel costar for thinking Chalamet actually had acne-scarred skin, when, in reality, he was made to look that way on purpose.
“Paltrow told me when she met you, she was like, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t know he had bad skin,’ ” Downey Jr. said to Chalamet.
“And I was like, ‘It’s f—ing makeup, Gwyneth,’ ” the actor added.

Marty Supreme follows Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a shoe salesman who is obsessed with becoming the world’s best table tennis player in 1950s New York City.
Alongside Chalamet and Paltrow, 53, the film, directed by Josh Safdie, also features Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher — a recent PEOPLE cover star.

During the Dec. 2 episode of The Run-Through with Vogue podcast, Paltrow, 53, recalled thinking Chalamet’s rough skin was his own and how she mistakenly offered him skincare advice amid filming.
“In Marty Supreme, Timothée has pockmarks, and they made his eyes beady with contacts and glasses. And it’s all makeup. And, in real life, he has beautiful skin … [and] he made a comment, and I was like, ‘Oh, you know, you can do microneedling for that,’ ” she recalled, laughing. “And he’s like, ‘This is makeup!’ I was like, ‘Oh, s—.’ I didn’t realize. The makeup was so good that I thought he had little acne scars.”
Paltrow and Chalamet got close working together on Marty Supreme, especially while filming what the actress said was “a lot” of sex scenes.
During a different Q&A held in support of the film, Paltrow recalled, “He was 27 or 28, and I was 50-whatever, and, I mean, it’s weird. And I [thought], ‘Oh, if it’s weird for me, then it’s going to probably really weird for [him],’ but actually, it was fine. It wasn’t that weird.”
“He’s so easy to work with,” she added of the recent Golden Globes and Critics Choice winner. “He’s so brilliant and committed and comfortable and confident.”
