Gwyneth Paltrow “developed a close friendship” with Dakota Johnson during the time she was in a relationship with Chris Martin.
The Goop founder “fully intends on maintaining that bond,” despite Johnson’s split from the Coldplay singer, a source tells PEOPLE.
Paltrow 52, and the Materialists actress, 35, “have grown close over the years and Gwyneth even considers Dakota family,” says the source
“There’s a genuine mutual respect between Gwyneth and Dakota, and they have a lot in common,” the source says. “They both grew up in the spotlight, have been in the business for years, and really relate to each other’s experiences.”
PEOPLE confirmed on Wednesday, June 4, that Johnson and Martin had broken up, ending their nearly eight-year, on-off relationship.
The pair — who were first romantically linked in 2017 — were photographed together two weeks ago when they stepped out in Malibu on May 16. Before that, in January, the pair held hands in India, where Martin was touring with his band.
The initial news of Johnson and Martin’s romance came less than two years after his divorce from Paltrow was finalized.
Martin, 48, and Paltrow — who share daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19 — were married from 2003 to 2014, when they “consciously uncoupled.”
In March 2024, an insider told PEOPLE that Johnson and Martin had actually been engaged for “years” after first sparking engagement rumors in 2020, though they were “in no rush to get married” at the time.
Breakup rumors swirled in August 2024, however, a rep for the actress shut down the claims and said the pair were still “happily together” at the time.
In November 2023, Paltrow shared a snap of her and Johnson holding hands while standing outdoors.
Paltrow also revealed a month earlier that she and Johnson were “very good friends.”
“We’re actually very good friends,” she said at the time while taking part in a Q&A on her Instagram Stories. “I love her so much.”
“She’s an adorable, wonderful person,” Paltrow added of the How to Be Single actress.
Johnson has opened up about being in the lives of Paltrow and Martin’s two children: “I love those kids like my life depends on it,” she told Bustle in March 2024. “With all my heart.”
