The final season of The Handmaid’s Tale is the perfect opportunity for Alexis Bledel to make her highly-anticipated return — but is there actually a chance that could happen?
During the red carpet event on Wednesday, April 2, for the hit Hulu series, creator Bruce Miller weighed in on potential cameos, exclusively telling Us Weekly, “There are so many people who I wish came back. We’ve had such good luck with our guest stars just as people and how wonderful they are. But I don’t want to blow anything.”
When it comes to onscreen surprises, Miller noted that there was still The Handmaid’s Tale‘s sequel series The Testaments to look forward to.
“There are people who return and the same thing in the Testaments. We’re gonna bring characters from The Handmaid’s Tale to that world as well,” he teased. “So there are people who show up — but to tell you who they are will take away all the fun.”
Miller expertly dodged a direct question about Bledel’s character Emily, joking, “I don’t know who that is. … I’m just kidding.”
Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where low fertility rates have resulted in women being forcefully assigned to men for the sole purpose of bearing children. In addition to Bledel, 43, Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella and Amanda Brugel have led the cast since the show’s premiere.
Bledel surprised fans when she left ahead of season 5.
“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time,” she told Variety in a 2022 statement. “I am forever grateful to [executive producer] Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
While The Handmaid’s Tale is wrapping up, the story is far from over. Atwood’s 2019 novel The Testaments received an official series order from Hulu before its predecessor’s sixth and final season, which premieres on Tuesday, April 8.
The Testaments, which is set 15 years later, is narrated by Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) as viewers are thrust back into the dystopian future with characters such as Agnes from Gilead and Daisy from Canada — as they secretly gather and smuggle incriminating information about Gilead’s regime out of the country. Agnes and Daisy pose as “Pearl Girls” to infiltrate Canada, while Aunt Lydia acts as a covert source within Gilead.
According to Miller, viewers should expect some surprises during The Handmaid’s Tale to The Testaments transition.

“I hope [the audience has] questions when the show ends.
