‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 6 Trailer Shows Return to Gilead Amid Rebellion, Teases Potential Spinoff

The Handmaid’s Tale is going out on a high note with a trailer teasing the deadly rebellion — and offering hints at the potential spinoff.

Hulu released the first look at the sixth and final season of the beloved series on Tuesday, March 19, where June (Elisabeth Moss) was seen returning to Gilead.”For years, we have been afraid of them,” June says. “Now it is time for them to be afraid of us.”

The plan to take down Gilead is a risky one, though. “They will never see us coming. Let the revolution begin,” June says later in the sneak peek. “This is the beginning of the end. Rise up and fight for your freedom.”

She continues: “We use all of our friends — everyone and anyone who hates Gilead — to finally declare enough.”

Some of the obstacles featured in the trailer include Josh Charles‘ mystery character, who promises to “hold these terrorist rebels accountable,” adding, “They need to be reminded who they are dealing with.”

Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), meanwhile, questions the “miserable hellscape” that they built. “We broke this country and now we have to fix it together,” he notes.

Elsewhere in the trailer, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) seems to play a big role as she switches from the signature wifely dark blue to a light periwinkle ensemble — and it seems like she’s walking down the aisle in a wedding dress. The pews are filled with handmaids. Could this ceremony have something to do with the “plan” she says God has for her?

The other surprising moments include Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle) going into Gilead, June and Nick (Max Minghella) kissing and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) trying to save Janine (Madeline Brewer), who seems to be working as a Jezebel.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where low fertility rates have led women to be assigned to men for bearing children. Season 5 left Us shook when June and Serena ran into each other on the same train of Gilead refugees headed to Vancouver before trying to settle in Hawaii — but the trailer makes it clear they won’t be soaking up the sun.

“It’s actually a pretty positive ending for the show and the season, which we don’t usually do. It’s a cliffhanger,” Moss, 42, told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2022 of the finale. “But there’s something positive about it. Of course, of all the people that would be on the train is this person who is her other half, the other half of this experience.”

Despite The Handmaid’s Tale coming to an end, the universe continues to grow with a potential spinoff. Set 15 years later, The Testaments is narrated by Aunt Lydia as viewers are thrust back into the dystopian future with new characters — such as Agnes from Gilead and Daisy from Canada —as they secretly gather and smuggle incriminating information about Gilead’s regime out of the country. Agnes and Daisy pose as “Pearl Girls” to infiltrate Canada, while Aunt Lydia acts as a covert source within Gilead.

The Handmaid’s Tale returns on Tuesday, April 8, and new episodes will be streaming on Hulu.
