Yes, Hannah Einbinder has seen those comments shipping her Hacks character with Jean Smart’s!
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Einbinder, 29, admitted she’s heard fans’ pleas for the show’s writers to turn her character Ava Daniels’ relationship with Smart’s Deborah Vance romantic.
“Girls, you know I want what you want,” she began, looking straight into the camera. “I have heard you, okay? We want the same things. I have relayed your message to the powers that be, okay? But I don’t think it’s going to happen and that’s the truth.”
While she encouraged fans to continue to “express” themselves through “beautiful” fan fiction stories, Einbinder joked that the requests were futile and viewers needed to “focus up” and turn their attention to more important issues.
“I will post on Instagram, ‘Hey guys, we all need to support SB222 to make polluters pay for climate disasters. Everybody sign the petition right now,'” she laughed. “I will get 16 replies that are like, ‘Make them kiss!'”
“I’m like girls, we’ve got to focus! There is no kissing on a dead planet, you know what I’m saying?” she added.
Hacks concluded its third season in May 2024, with season 4 being announced the day after the finale was released. The show follows the relationship between Deborah (Smart), an out-of-touch and past-her-prime comedian, and Ava (Einbinder), an up-and-coming writer who is hired to revive Vance’s struggling career.
Season 3 left off in a dire place — in a shocking twist ending, Ava betrayed Deborah after the comedian had stabbed her in the back by naming someone else as the head writer of her new late-night show. Ava blackmailed Deborah in retaliation, threatening to expose a secret that could jeopardize her career in order to get the position of head writer.
While speaking at the Hacks FYC panel in May 2024, Smart opened up about Ava and Deborah’s new dynamic and admitted she was excited to see how their relationship would change.
“I’m very curious to see how this is going to play out in that situation where [Deborah and Ava are] working together very closely every day with that wicked, wicked thing [Ava] did,” she said, adding that her character is both “outraged” and impressed by Ava’s move.
“[In the finale] there was a look on [Ava’s] face,” the Frasier actress recalled. “Came up to [Hannah], I said, ‘You wouldn’t.’ And I took a step toward her, and there was this moment of terror before she pulled together and said, ‘I would.’”
