A full report on Hannah Moody’s tragic death has been released after her body was discovered near an Arizona trail in May.
According to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office, the 31-year-old hiking influencer was found “deceased and decomposing” about two days after she failed to return from the trail near Scottsdale. The temperature outside reportedly reached a high of 103 degrees.
The medical examiner’s office previously concluded that Moody’s cause of death was “environmental heat exposure.” Her manner of death was determined to be accidental. The full postmortem analysis specifies that her body was discovered with “decompositional changes” and “abrasions of the right shoulder and lower extremities.”
Her toxicology results were negative for “ethanol, screened drugs of abuse, and select therapeutic medications,” the medical examiner’s report states. She had only “minimally elevated creatinine and urea nitrogen.”
Moody was a Christian influencer with over 45,000 followers on Instagram. She regularly shared content online about her religious beliefs and her affinity for hiking in Arizona.
Concerned friends initially reported Moody as a missing person on May 21 at around 7:50 p.m. Her body was discovered 600 yards off-trail just after noon the next day by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Air Unit, near the Gateway Trailhead of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
The Scottsdale Police Department said in a press release that officers “began search efforts on foot, with drones and assistance from a Phoenix Police Department helicopter.” Her body was discovered on May 22.
Less than one week later, her mother, Terri Moody, spoke to Arizona’s Family about her heartbreaking death. At the time, Terri called her daughter’s death “a mystery.”
“We’re trying to piece it all together because we don’t know of any conditions that she had or anything like that that would have caused anything,” the grieving parent said, adding, “We’re all assuming it was heat-related, but you know that’s inconclusive. There were no signs of foul play.”
