I’m a Hot Sleeper in Perimenopause — These Cooling Blankets and Pajamas Helped Calm My Night Sweats from $8

NEED TO KNOW

  • Perimenopause is the time before menopause when the body makes less estrogen and periods become irregular.
  • It often happens in your 40s and can cause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and mood changes.
  • Cooling bedding, moisture-wicking pajamas, and a bedside fan are just a few products that allow for more comfortable sleep

Perimenopause, but make it cool.

I’m a mom in my mid-40s navigating perimenopause, and nighttime hot flashes have rudely barged into my bedroom. I’ve always been a hot sleeper, but when night sweats started waking me up at 3 a.m., I realized my usual cotton bedding wasn’t going to cut it anymore.

So, I started curating a new sleep setup complete with cooling sheets, breathable pajamas, a temperature-regulating comforter, and a bedside fan. Now, thanks to these thoughtful upgrades, instead of waking up overheated and tossing off the covers, my body temperature stays more balanced throughout the night.

Whether you’re dealing with perimenopause, night sweats, or have always been a hot sleeper, these cooling sleep essentials from Amazon can provide some relief.

Cooling Sheets

Cooling sheets are typically made from breathable or moisture-managing fabrics like bamboo viscose or lightweight tencel. They’re designed to promote airflow and help draw sweat away for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

I personally swear by Cozy Earth’s bamboo sheets — and I’m in good company. Oprah Winfrey has called them a “favorite,” too. They’re silky soft and noticeably cool to the touch, and since switching, I’m less likely to wake up feeling like I’m trapped in an oven.

Cooling Blankets

Sleeping without any blanket at all isn’t cozy for most folks — especially if your body temperature fluctuates. Cooling blankets make for a lightweight layer that provides coverage while letting heat escape. They’re breathable, easy to toss on or off, and come in handy when hot flashes strike.

Cooling Comforters

If your comforter traps heat, cooling sheets and blankets might not be enough.

Cooling comforters are usually made with breathable fill materials and temperature-regulating fabrics that are designed to prevent heat from getting trapped (while still providing a light layer of warmth).

My Rest Evercool comforter genuinely changed the way I sleep. I look forward to slipping under it every night and feeling that silky, cool-to-the-touch goodness. And if one area warms up, I can just rotate it to find a fresh, more temperate spot. I can’t imagine my nightly routine without it.

Cooling Pillows

Another sneaky source of heat at night is your pillow. It can trap warmth around your head and neck, making hot flashes feel way more intense.

Cooling pillows often use gel-infused foam, ventilated designs, or breathable covers to release heat while you sleep. I use a Tempur-Pedic pillow with a layer of cooling gel on both sides. When one side warms up, I flip it over, and it instantly feels cool again, which helps me fall back asleep without sweating.

Cooling Pajamas

Traditional pajamas can leave you feeling sticky after a hot flash. Cooling pajamas made from lightweight, breathable materials keep you drier and more comfortable. My favorites are bamboo stretch-knit sets from Cozy Earth and Soma’s Cool Nights collection. Since switching, I feel less clammy and more cozy.

Nightstand Essentials for Hot Sleepers

A few small bedside upgrades can also make a big difference when hot flashes strike. My top essentials are a small fan for airflow and a cold water bottle to stay hydrated.

My favorite fan is the Iris USA Woozoo that doubles as soothing white noise and has an adjustable tilt. I also rotate between my Owala and Brümate insulated bottles filled with ice water on my nightstand, in case I wake up feeling overheated and thirsty. A regular glass of water is just asking to be knocked over when I’m half asleep — and it’ll be lukewarm by morning, anyway.
