Mariah Carey is back.
Nearly seven years after the release of her 15th studio album, Caution, the legendary singer is gearing up for her next era, which is already creating plenty of buzz in the industry.
“Mariah is really pleased with the positive reception to her new song, ‘Type Dangerous,’” a music insider exclusively tells Us Weekly.
Carey dropped the lead single from her upcoming album on Friday, June 6, and performed it for the first time three days later at the 2025 BET Awards, where she was honored with the Ultimate Icon trophy.

And then a hero comes along! Since launching her music career, Mariah Carey has become one of the most adored and bestselling artists of all time. As the daughter of an opera singer and vocal coach, the Huntington, New York, native grew up surrounded by music. She started singing at the age of 3 and […]
The “Type Dangerous” music video, which will premiere on Friday, June 13, sounds like it will have plenty of people talking too; director Joseph Kahn recently teased on X that it features an “earth shattering surprise.”
“She has high hopes for her upcoming album, as does her team,” the insider shares.
The Grammy winner has spent the last few years celebrating the resurgence of interest in her 1994 album, Merry Christmas, in addition to reissuing some of her most beloved projects, including The Emancipation of Mimi, which turned 20 in April.
Now, Carey is ready to shift her focus to the future.
“She is, of course, amazed by the renewed success of ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ each year, but she wants to remind the world that she’s more than just the Queen of Christmas,” the insider tells Us. “It’s been a while since Mariah has had a new hit, but everyone around her is confident that this will be her most fruitful and successful era in over a decade.” (Her last non-holiday No. 1 single was 2008’s “Touch My Body.”)
The chanteuse has yet to unveil the details of her 16th album, though she has confirmed it will be executive produced by L.A. Reid, who played a key role in her 2005 comeback.
“Working on and releasing this new music has really lit a fire under her,” the insider says. “She has a lot in store for her Lambily.”

Since Mariah Carey hit the scene in 1990, she has proved time and time again why she is the Songbird Supreme. Over the past three decades, the pop diva has had a whopping 19 singles reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the most for any solo artist. (The Beatles hold the all-time […]
Carey’s as-yet-untitled new album will be her first under Gamma, a media company co-owned by longtime music executive Larry Jackson. (Epic Records released Caution in 2018.)
“It is a game-changing moment because it’s one of our premier stars who has made a decision to join forces with an independent, self-contained company that is not associated with any of the major labels,” Reid told Forbes last week. “It’s a game changer for both Gamma and Mariah.”
Reid acknowledged that Carey is “fighting to stay contemporary,” to which Jackson shared his vision for the Songbird Supreme’s next chapter: “She’s been a part of the machine for her entire career. It’s about unfinished business, and it’s about independence. A lot of companies are really focused on frothy, viral, trendy TikTok hits versus really understanding the art form of artist development and what it takes to work with a diva. And it takes having a different kind of master’s degree or a PhD to really understand exactly how to guide a career of that particular nature at this particular time.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Carey’s rep for comment.
