The 9-1-1 first responders aren’t off the clock just yet.
In April 2025, ABC renewed the popular procedural drama for season 9. The news came about one month before the season 8 finale on May 15.
Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, 9-1-1 follows the high-pressure experiences of Los Angeles first responders — including police officers, firefighters, paramedics and dispatchers — who also juggle often messy personal lives.
In season 8, the show took a devastating turn when Bobby (Peter Krause) died. Shortly after, Angela Bassett, who portrays Bobby’s on-screen wife Athena, told PEOPLE in May 2025 that she’s still mourning the fictional loss.
“I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. It wasn’t my choice,” she said of her on-screen husband’s departure. “Keep hope alive. Maybe he’ll return in my dreams … my memories.”
From a premiere date to which cast members are returning, here’s everything to know about 9-1-1 season 9.

Is 9-1-1 coming back for season 9?
Yes, 9-1-1 will return for a ninth season with an 18-episode order, ABC announced in April 2025.
Upon the renewal, the cast expressed their gratitude on social media.
“Thank you for your unwavering support. It’s amazing that you love us as much as we love making the show,” Bassett told fans in an April Instagram post.
She then guaranteed that season 9 will bring “more high-octane, more heartwarming, more intense, more hilarious stories, drama [and] adventure.”
Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Maddie, said she was “so excited” and “so grateful” that the show will be coming back.
“It’s super exciting that we get to see what all of our amazing characters are going to do [next],” she said in a series of April Instagram Stories.
What will 9-1-1 season 9 be about?
ABC has yet to release any plot details for 9-1-1 season 9.
Bassett herself is keeping tightlipped, too: When ScreenRant asked the actress in May 2025 about her character’s trajectory following Bobby’s death, she replied, “I wonder. They really shocked me so much with that one.”
“I am fearful almost to ask what’s in store for her, but she might need a little therapy, along with a couple others, to get through this,” Bassett continued. “It was a blow to the heart. I don’t know if she’s going to throw herself even more into work, which means more stunts. We’re going to see.”
As for Oliver Stark, who portrays Buck, he told TVLine that he hopes his character’s love life gets to a “settled place” with Tommy Kinard (Lou Ferrigno Jr.).
Which cast members are returning for 9-1-1 season 9?
As of right now, no cast members are confirmed for season 9.
However, Bassett, Stark and Hewitt have all spoken up about their excitement for the show’s next chapter. Aisha Hinds, who plays Hen, also reposted a graphic about the renewal on her Instagram.
The other 9-1-1 mainstay is Kenneth Choi as Chimney.
While speaking with PEOPLE in February 2025, Bassett shared that she’d love to see Connie Britton return to the series after appearing in seasons 1 and 3.
“Connie, open door, whenever you want to come back,” she said.
Why did Peter Krause leave 9-1-1?
During season 8, episode 15, Bobby died from a rare, deadly virus called Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) after contracting it during a lab fire response.
Creator Tim Meiner told Variety that Bobby’s shocking death was a “creative” decision — not a result of Krause’s desire to leave the series.
“It was entirely creative. A very difficult creative decision, because there’s practically no one I love on this Earth more than Peter [Krause],” he said. “After eight years, it just felt like, if we have any hope of creating stories going forward that have actual stakes, then someone’s got to die.”
Meiner continued, “I think it needed to be Bobby for a lot of reasons. I just didn’t want to go small. Bobby’s death affects every single character’s story in a way that really no other character death would.”
In a statement obtained by Variety, Krause told fans that they “have a right to be” upset over Bobby’s death.
“It is a loss,” he wrote. “That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice, and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them.”
When is 9-1-1 season 9 coming out?
ABC hasn’t announced a premiere date for 9-1-1 season 9.
However, the network has confirmed that 9-1-1 season 9 will air in its regular slot of Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET.
