James Van Der Beek Says His Kids Re-Taught Him ‘How to Live’ Amid Cancer Battle

James Van Der Beek is reflecting on parenthood while celebrating Father’s Day amid his cancer battle.

“Being a father has been the most treasured honor of my life,” Van Der Beek, 48, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, June 15. “Thank you to my kids for re-teaching me how to live, laugh, love, and show up in my own life and in the world.”

James shared a series of photos with his and Kimberly Van Der Beek’s six children as they posed in a field with flowers before giving a sweet shout-out to his wife, 43.

“And thank you to my super hero of a wife @vanderkimberly who constantly exceeds the boundaries of what I thought was human capacity,” he concluded. “I love you all with all my heart.”

One day before his post, Kimberly shared a photo of James and their children heading off on a family vacation. (James and Kimberly, who tied the knot in 2010, share daughters Olivia, 14, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and sons Joshua, 13, and Jeremiah, 3.)

“We [are] ready for you Florida! Excited to go see family! 💕🫶🏼,” Kimberly captioned the Saturday, June 14, Instagram post.

Months prior, James shared his diagnosis with colorectal cancer and explained his family’s positive outlook.

“I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” he told People in 2024. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

In March, the Dawson’s Creek alum shared that he was hopeful about turning the corner. “I feel like I can see the finish line… I’m in a healing phase, which is great,” James told Extra at the time. “I’m going back to work next month. I’m taking this month really to just kind of relax.”

James, who competed on season 13 of The Masked Singer, noted that he was grateful to perform while underneath his costume. (Country star Gretchen Wilson won season 13 of the reality singing competition earlier this year.)

“Especially with everything I was going through, and I just announced the health issues I was dealing with, so to be able to put on the mask and connect with an audience without that being a part of the equation was actually a really beautiful thing,” he explained. “I appreciated the mask. The costume itself was heavy as could be… but the mask I appreciated.”
