January’s New Moon Is All About Setting Goals and 3 Zodiac Signs Are Forced to Take Action

January’s new moon in Capricorn will emerge on Jan. 18, and offers us a time to reflect on some of our goals for the upcoming year.

The new moon will peak at 12:53 p.m. and, as it will be in the Earth sign’s domain, the energy of the zodiac sign will surely seep into the cosmos.

Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas tells PEOPLE that Capricorn “is a zodiac sign that rules society and its structures, ambition, professional goals and authority figures.” As such, the most effective way to utilize the vibrations from the new moon is to “brainstorm your career goals for the year and start to take action to push matters in your favor,” Thomas says.

When the next full moon in Capricorn eventually rolls around on June 29, Thomas says that all of those goals and plans set into motion now will bubble up again, giving us a chance to revisit our progress midway through the year. According to Thomas, there are a few astrological aspects to be aware of surrounding January’s new moon.

The first is that this moon is in conjunction with Mercury, the “planet of the mind.” Thomas notes that this facet will “aid us in balancing logic and emotions and will stimulate a great degree of mental and social activity.”

The moon will also be conjunct in Venus, Mars and Pluto, a combination that should bring quite a bit of intensity to the vibrations.

The Venus conjunct will bring a “heightened sense of beauty, inspiration, and joy to our lives,” while the Mars conjunct revs up the passion, with Thomas noting that it will “fire up our desires, emotions, and ambitions.” The Pluto conjunct is pure intensity, with Thomas sharing that “powerful emotions and situations” may be brought to the surface.

Thomas adds that the new moon is also exactly sextile Saturn: “the planetary ruler of this lunation.”

“This can bring stability and security to our lives, especially if we are self-reliant, practical, organized, and persistent. Discipline and common sense can aid us in building our personal and professional lives,” he says. The moon’s sextile Neptune will bring “an almost divine sense of synchronicity to our lives.”

Finally, a trine Uranus will shepherd “new opportunities and positive change to our lives when we think outside of the box and embrace new paths.”

Read on to find out how the new moon in Capricorn will impact your zodiac sign.

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Make that career domination master plan, Aries! Thomas tells PEOPLE that this new moon will “open a doorway in your life to achieve more in the coming year, as well as rise higher in your industry.” It could be a time when “promotions, awards, new job offers or favorable recognition” could arrive. Use this energy “to take the lead and show the world your power,” Thomas says.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

“The new moon will energize you to switch up your routine and take chances!” Thomas says. Though it can feel easy to stay within the bounds of your comfort zone, Thomas advises that you’ll “feel a surge of momentum to look further into the horizon.” Now could be a time for some Tauruses to “get busy with new academic, intellectual, legal or media pursuits, while others could be saying it’s time to plan an exciting vacation,” he notes.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Let’s get intimate, Gemini! You should feel encouraged by this new moon to “trust others,” Thomas says. “Be vulnerable in your exchanges and learn how to share. You could be requiring more assistance from partners in business or love or even considering applying for more benefits from your job.” Thomas adds that “if you speak up and apply, you’ll have the universe stepping in to aid you now. The key, though, is to take action.”

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Union will be calling your name now, Cancer. This new moon will “ignite your sense of connection with others, especially partners in business and love,” per Thomas. “Commitments could be on the top of your mind” at this time and this time could even spur the discussion of “long-term plans with your twin flame at your side.” However, he advises that it would be wise to hold off on any engagements or marriages until February, because “Venus is retrograde in your partnership sector.”

“On one hand, this could connect you with an ex, but on the other, it could mean that any major promise now will ultimately not work out,” he says. “Single Cancers could have luck attracting someone with long-term potential.”

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

It’s time to get busy, Leo, as Thomas says this new moon will “activate your sector of productivity.” You should expect an “increase in the pace of life for you as you pick up more projects and responsibilities in life and at work.” If you’re looking for work at the moment, keep an eye out in the days following Jan. 18’s new moon. “Also, this is an auspicious time to recharge your fitness, diet and health goals for the year to come,” Thomas says.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Spice up your life, Virgo. You’ll feel energized at this time to “have more fun, enjoy recreation and let out your sassy side.” Also, now is a time to seek out romance, “as you will certainly be in the mood for love.” Thomas says, adding that “single Virgos will have a higher likelihood of finding someone just their type and passion could be sizzling.”

“This may even be an ex, old flame or someone you have previously met — just don’t commit or make any major decisions with Venus retrograde taking place,” he adds.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Reconnect with your roots, Libra. “The new moon energizes your sector of home, domesticity and family,” Thomas says, advising that now is the time you might be considering a “move or wanting to make some sort of transition in your living space.”

He also says that “while a family situation will likely pop up now,” it’s time to “focus on growing closer with your kindred and reconnecting to relatives you may not have seen in quite some time.”

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21).

Now is the time to speak up, Scorpio, as Thomas notes, you’ll find your communication and travel sector activated. Now is the time to “broadcast your ideas, learn and see what it looks like out of your current surroundings.” As such he adds that “journeying to see siblings or to nearby cities or towns will energize you. If you wish to enroll in a class for the year to come, you’ll do exceptionally well if you make movement toward it now.”

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Make that money, Sagittarius. “While a lucrative check, raise, client or job offer could manifest, you will also need to put yourself out there to uncover every possible financial win,” Thomas says. “This lunation will help set you’re your financial life for the year to come, so assess your budget and find ways to make your wealth grow.”

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Happy Birthday, Capricorn! Thomas says that this new moon is “the most important” of the year for you. “Use the week that follows this lunation to take action to build the life of your dreams and put yourself out there,” he counsels. “Step into your power, trust your inner motivations and seize the day. You’ll find more luck on your side.”

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

It’s time for some TLC, Aquarius. Thomas says, “Self-love, reflection and a spa day are in order for you! The new moon will energize you to rest, recharge and relax, as well as encourage you to brainstorm and visualize what you’d like to manifest in the year to come.” Now is the time to work on goals that might need a bit of extra lead time.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Celebrate the good life, Pisces! Thomas says, “Light off the fireworks, bust out your sexiest outfit and circulate.” Now is a good moment to connect with friends IRL and online. “Build your network and socialize amongst your crew,” he says.

If an event appears on your calendar following this new moon, be sure to attend, Thomas advises. Turn to things like social media to fire up your network and connect with those who can help you achieve your goals. “If single, try your hand at online dating—a hot option will be looking your way,” he muses.
