Jennifer Love Hewitt Gets Hooked Back Into Chaos in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Trailer

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will never outrun what they did that summer.

The OG stars return in the first trailer for the horror franchise’s latest installment, which dropped on Tuesday, April 22. The first look opens with Madelyn Cline‘s character taking a relaxing bath while listening to a guided meditation, completely unaware that her boyfriend is being brutally killed downstairs.

In the aftermath, Cline’s character asks a friend whether her boyfriend’s death was “some kind karma for what we did,” as she and her friend group appear to have found themselves responsible for a death like the characters of the original film.

“What if someone saw what happened?” she adds. Someone seemingly did, as she receives a a card featuring the film’s titular statement, “I know what you did last summer.”

It’s official: Jennifer Love Hewitt is returning to her horror roots. “It’s never too late to go back,” Hewitt wrote via Instagram in December 2024, confirming that she will reprise her role as Julie James in the upcoming reboot of the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer. “Julie James is returning,” Hewitt […]

In the trailer, Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson asks local police how they plan to handle the recent killings, noting, “This isn’t the first time there’s been violence like this in Southport. It’s not going to stop.”

Following terrifying clips of the franchise’s next generation being hunted down by the town’s latest killer, the trailer ends with Chase Sui Wonders‘ character recruiting none other than Hewitt’s iconic final girl, Julie James, for help.

“I just have one question. What did you do last summer?” she asks.

The film’s cast also includes Tyriq Withers, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Jonah Hauer-King, Austin Nichols, Lola Tung, Sarah Pidgeon and Gabbriette.

Sony announced in May 2024 that a revival of the iconic franchise was in the works. The film, which hits theaters on July 18, is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, Someone Great) who also cowrote the script with Sam Lansky after an original script from Leah McKendrick.

“When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences,” the official synopsis reads. “A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”

The original 1997 film starred Hewitt, 46, and Prinze Jr., 49, alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as four friends who are stalked by a mysterious serial killer with a hook after they try to cover up an accidental car accident that leaves a stranger dead. The movie was written by Scream and Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson and based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan.

Hewitt and Prinze Jr. returned for the sequel film, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, in 1998 alongside Brandy and Mekhi Phifer. An entirely new cast was introduced for the third film, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. Prime Video also launched a reboot series in 2021, but the show was canceled after just one season.
