Jessica Simpson Says ‘Nashville Canyon’ EP Is About ‘Learning to Hear My Heart Again’

Jessica Simpson listened to her heart when it came to crafting her Nashville Canyon, Part 1 record.

“I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free. His eyes are on the sparrow and I know He watches me,” Simpson, 44, wrote via Instagram on Friday, March 21. “God told me I needed to feel the fear and do it anyway as I’m moving into my truth while embracing the beauty of uncertainty. And so I did.”

According to Simpson, her newly released EP is “the result of learning to hear my heart again, free from industry expectations.”

“It’s about surrendering, letting my voice be my main guide, and trusting the journey ahead,” she explained. “Always inviting God into the room where music creates itself, with a voice that communicates on a spiritual level of grace without fear and allowing the music to be my main voice.”

Jessica Simpson jumped back into music with the support of her family — including her estranged husband, Eric Johnson. “It is a gift. Eric supported that gift. My kids supported that gift,” Jessica, 44, shared in an interview with her sister, Ashlee Simpson, for The Cut published on Thursday, February 20. Rather than record her […]

Simpson concluded, “Nashville Canyon: Part 1 is a FEELING. Now, with its release, I hope everyone that is meant to catch the vibes will wrap their heart and soul around it just like I have within their own journey.”

Simpson previously said that she took lyrical inspiration from her breakup with Eric Johnson — they separated earlier this year after a decade of marriage — while writing Nashville Canyon.

“I was out in Nashville and I had my heart wide open, I was in a very intuitive state and I had to ask some very personal questions on the home front,” Simpson recalled during a performance at Texas’ Luck Reunion festival on March 14. “I found out that my world had been turned upside down and that life was very different.”

She added at the time, “When we open our hearts, sometimes we’re vulnerable and it just gets broken. Maybe sometimes we forget that we’ve been broken for a really long time, but when we meet ourselves, when we write, when we sing [and] when we connect with ourselves, we find all the answers.”

Simpson and former NFL star Johnson, 45, had been together since 2010, going on to welcome daughters Maxwell, 12, and Birdie, 5, as well as son Ace, 11. Us Weekly confirmed in January that Simpson and Johnson separated.

“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson told Us in a statement. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”

The next month, Simpson told People that Johnson was “still very much a part of my life” as they focused on amicably coparenting their three children.
