Joe Keery Is ‘Okay’ If He’s Only Ever Known as Steve Harrington from Stranger Things

Joe Keery has no problem staying in character.

The Stranger Things star is best known for playing Steve Harrington in the hit show and described the role as a “gift” during an appearance on the Wednesday, April 23, episode of the Zach Sang Show.

The 33-year-old multi-hyphenate discussed the sci-fi hit when asked if it was “weird” being in a role that’s “so iconic” it could be what people associate him with for the “longest of time.”

“I mean what a gift it’s been to do it,” he said. “There’s a part of me, obviously, that is like ‘No, I’m more than just that.’ But I don’t know, I’m kind of okay with that.”

“If that’s all, I mean — what an insane ride that has been,” continued Keery. “But I guess now it puts me in this place of privilege to be able to just like chase the things I’m really interested in doing.”

Keery said that in addition to pursuing music, which he currently does under the moniker Djo, he is also looking for new roles that are “interesting.”

“A thing like that, I mean that’s like a once in a lifetime thing, you know? What a fun and crazy ride,” said Keery.

Elsewhere in the episode, the actor discussed the “constant battle” of “who am I” that comes with playing such a big role.

“I think there is something to it, and also the impostor syndrome of it all. Being so fortunate to do something and wanting to prove that you’re worthy of this opportunity that you’ve been given, and all of these things coming together,” he said.

Filming for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things wrapped in December. Earlier this year, Keery shared during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the experience was “crazy.”

“It was a long year. But to wrap it all up and the anticipation of working on something for so long — I mean it’s been one-third of my life, really,” he said.

“It was emotional. We sort of got to that last day and it was like everything really hit on that last day of shooting,” he added.
