John Mayer is single and ready to mingle!
On Thursday, June 12, SiriusXM presented SmartLess Live, a special live taping of the hit podcast with hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes — as well as special guest Mayer.
During their conversation, which took place at Avalon Hollywood, the musician opened up about wide-ranging topics including his stint as a standup comedian, his songwriting — and his dating life.
“I’m a single person. I’m a catch,” Mayer, 47, joked on stage.
When Bateman, 56, asked if he had dreams of being a husband one day, Mayer said “absolutely.”
Arnett, 55, added, “It’s not easy for John Mayer to date. In all seriousness, like, what are you going to do? It’s tough to meet people.”
The “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” singer clarified that it’s actually “a good filtration system” — and realized that when the right person comes along it’ll be “easy.”
“I would not date someone if it didn’t have the upward mobility of becoming a marriage… every girlfriend would be a potential wife at this point,” he said.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Mayer also opened up about his dating preferences and said that he’s developed “the best parts of me.” He also thinks that “being behaved is the hottest s— in the world.”
“I think that younger people need to get a head start on being more vulnerable,” he said. “Being sarcastically invulnerable and apathetic is a really good healing mechanism to get over the past breakup.”
“I fear there’s a generation of… people, men and women, who have decided to come into relationships in a very inflexible, sarcastic [way],” he explained, adding that “vulnerability is the s—.”
After the conversation, Mayer picked up the acoustic guitar and played a medley of hits. He was also joined by Hayes on vocals during “No Such Thing.”
The episode will be released exclusively to subscribers on July 24, airing first on SiriusXM Satrs and then available on demand in the SiriusXM app and to SiriusXM Podcasts+ subscribers in Apple Podcasts. It will be released wide on July 31.
In January 2024, Mayer opened up to pal Kelly Rizzo about his desire to get married during an episode of her podcast Comfort Food.
“You know the secret, which is that I’m actually fairly well-adjusted. And I so badly want to get married if only for my wife to just know in her heart, like, ‘John will know what to do.’ I just think that level of being relied on is the hottest thing in the world to me. ‘If my husband was here, he would know what to do. Call John. Call my husband.’ You’re a full grown-up when this is your romantic fantasy. You’re a fully fledged grown-up.”
Meanwhile, in 2017, the “Gravity” singer told the New York Times that he called settling down “the final frontier” and wanted the “baby with the protective earphones,” referencing his future child in the crowd at one of his shows wearing noise-canceling headphones.
