John Mulaney Jokes About Drawing Up His Will, Leaving Netflix Talk Show to His Daughter

John Mulaney envisions his baby daughter, Méi, taking over his Netflix talk show.

“I specified in my will that I’m leaving this show to my 6-month-old baby girl, so if anything happens to me, she will automatically become the host and Netflix has no say in it,” Mulaney, 42, joked during the Wednesday, March 26, episode of Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney

He added, “That chunky little blue-eyed beauty, sitting out there. Unable to talk but looking right down the barrel.”

Mulaney shared that he drew up his will recently.

John Mulaney was vocal about not wanting to have kids before welcoming his first child with Olivia Munn. However, when Mulaney confirmed that Munn was pregnant in September 2021, he revealed how important becoming a father was to him. “In the spring I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful […]

“I’m trying to get ahead of death a little,” he said. “I had my will put together this year. I tell you this, most of the time I’m like the most liberal, democratic person imaginable. I’m always like ‘Bill Gates should pay his taxes.’ Man, when I sat up and drew this thing up, when it comes to my dead body, I’m not giving anyone a goddamn cent.”

He continued, joking, “I have the most elaborate tax schemes planned. I sat down with my lawyers and they were like, ‘OK, the moment you die, we will get you declared a small business in Aruba. Then your children will be the sole employees. According to maritime law, the IRS cannot tax monies that exchange hands over the beach.’ You can say whatever you want in a will, for real.”

Mulaney shares Méi as well as son Malcolm, 3, with wife Olivia Munn. (The couple welcomed Méi via surrogate in September 2024 amid Munn’s breast cancer battle.)

The comedian kicked off the second season of his talk show this month, featuring Saturday Night Live alum Fred Armisen and folk icon Joan Baez in the first episode. He revealed in a Vulture profile that a Netflix exec was worried those names might not draw enough excitement.

Mulaney said he was told, “This is not the show we sold,” a critique he ignored. “It was great to see someone kind of apoplectic — like, ‘Oh, honey, do you know what you bought?’ And then they go, ‘We don’t even understand what this rundown means!’” he continued. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, you think you’ll feel better when I explain “telescope murder”? If I walk you through that it’s a Body Double parody, you’ll feel better about the spend?’”

In his March 12 monologue, Mulaney quipped, “Netflix picked up this show by accident. They thought it was a true-crime documentary because I look like a disappeared boy.”
