John Stamos is wading into dark waters.

The actor, 62, teased his role in The Hunting Wives season 2 while speaking with PEOPLE on the Drag red carpet at the 2026 SXSW Film & TV Festival on Friday, March 13, in Austin, Texas.

"I'm in this phase of my career where I'm really looking for challenging, different roles. People trust me. I've been coming to their homes for 30, 40 years or whatever. It's like, ‘Okay, we'll take this ride with him,’ and then it's like, ‘Oh no, oh no, it's getting weird. It's getting weird,' " he says.

"I just did Hunting Wives, which is a pretty dark, wild show,” Stamos adds as an example.

When asked if he prefers to work on comedies or darker projects, he says that he's "so grateful that I get to do both."

"I just finished Palm Royale season 2, and then Hunting Wives was a lot darker than I normally do. Like I said, I can get away with a little bit more than other actors, for a little while at least — until these things start coming out where it's like, ‘Oh, that's Stamos,' " the Full House alum says.

In December, Stamos said his wife, Caitlin McHugh, had a very raunchy question when she found out he would be joining the sophomore season of the Netflix series.

"I told my wife I was doing it, and she said, ‘Are you gonna show your penis?’ ” the actor recalled during an interview on the Today show. “And I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ But it’s one of those shows.” At the time, Stamos said he hadn’t yet received the season 2 script.

The Hunting Wives, based on the bestselling book by May Cobb, follows Sophie O’Neil (Brittany Snow) who moves to Texas and falls in with a group of socialites run by Margo Banks (Malin Akerman), leading her into a world of seduction and murder. Katie Lowes, Dermot Mulroney, Chrissy Metz and Jaime Ray Newman also star.

Stamos’s latest work, Drag, is produced by Danny DeVito and his adult children, Lucy and Jake DeVito, under their production company Jersey Films 2nd Avenue.

The movie, directed by Raviv Ullman and Greg Yagolnitzer, follows two sisters as they decide to rob a rural home in upstate New York. But during the robbery, one of them injures their back and becomes immobilized. "The night spirals out of control as they embark on a painful journey to make it out before the homeowner returns," the synopsis teases.

Stamos portrays an eccentric artist in the movie, a role that he notes is also much different from his usual.

"It becomes very dark in this movie. I watched a lot of true crime [to prepare for the role]. I really wanted to change my look. I wore dark contacts and I had my eyebrows thinner. It really freaked my wife out," he tells PEOPLE at the premiere.

"It took me a little while to shake the character,” he admits. “It's very hard for me to be really focused because I like to entertain. I like to talk to the crew and stuff, but on this one, I was like I'm just going to play this guy. I'm not going to hang out with the girls because, you know, I didn't know them in the movie. I took it seriously, and I'm just grateful to be here."
