Jon Hamm Takes the Stage at Popular Karaoke Bar in Chicago and Performs Hits Including Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’

Jon Hamm gave fans a night to remember when he took to the stage at a popular Chicago karaoke bar on New Year’s Day.

On Wednesday, Jan. 1, patrons of Bub City were treated to a New Year’s surprise when the Mad Men alum, 53, made an unexpected appearance and showed off his vocal chops during a live band karaoke performance.

The Transformers One star hammed it up for the audience, performing several numbers including renditions of Neil Diamond’s 1969 hit “Sweet Caroline,” Radiohead’s “Creep” and Prince’s “1999.”

A rep for Bub City tells PEOPLE that Hamm casually walked onstage as Lloyd Snyder of Lloyd Snyder & the Big Rig Band handed him a mic. “Jon’s here,” Hamm announced to the packed crowd, prompting lots of cheers and clapping.

“All right, Jon, welcome to Chicago,” Snyder said, as he pointed the actor toward the lyrics screen.

“Chicago’s wonderful, but I’m from St. Louis,” Hamm then said, jokingly adding, “Calm down, everyone.”

That’s when the actor kicked off his first vocal performance of the night: Garth Brooks’ “Friend’s in Low Places.”

Bub City later posted a carousel on Instagram featuring a series of videos of the actor onstage with the caption: “When Jon Hamm grabs the mic at Live Band Karaoke, it’s a night to remember. 🎤✨. Thanks for kicking off Life Band Karaoke 2025 with us, Jon!”

The karaoke venue also shared Instagram posts from lucky customers who witnessed the actor’s performance and tagged videos on their official account.

“Jon Hamm hammin’ it up at @bubcity 😆,” wrote one Instagram user, who posted a video of Hamm playing some air guitar as he sang Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places.”

Later in the evening, the Top Gun: Maverick star returned to the stage for an encore, which included a performance of Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” complete with female backup singers.

Hamm had the entire crowd singing along as he belted out “Sweet Caroline.”

“Jon Hamm lovin on some live karaoke @bubcity,” posted another Instagram user, who shared an Instagram Stories snap of Hamm’s rendition of the Neil Diamond classic.

According to Bub City’s rep, the actor was in town for the NHL Winter Classic, which saw the Chicago Blackhawks face off against the St. Louis Blues at Wrigley Field on New Year’s Eve. Hamm was joined by Chicago mainstay Bill Murray during a telecast on TNT. Hamm, of course, was rooting for the Blues, who ended up winning, 6-2.
