My Best Friend’s Wedding fans can celebrate: Julia Roberts is discussing reprising her role as Jules Potter for the sequel.
When the Oscar winner, 57, spoke with Variety about her new movie After the Hunt in a joint interview with costars Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield and director Luca Guadagnino, she said she is in talks to appear in the recently announced sequel to 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding.
The outlet asked Roberts whether she has been approached to star in a sequel, or if she may not appear at all. “No, they’re talking to me,” Robert said.
According to Variety, Roberts laughed when Guadagnino, 54, said during the interview that he would direct the sequel “in a second.”
Multiple outlets reported on July 29 that Past Lives and Materialists director Celine Song had signed on to write a sequel to one of Roberts’ rom-com classics, in which she costarred with Dermot Mulroney.
Song, 37, signed on as a screenwriter, and the sequel did not yet have a director or official casting announcements to share. Australian filmmaker P.J. Hogan directed the original My Best Friend’s Wedding, but he has not directed a movie since 2012’s Mental, which starred Toni Collette and Liev Schreiber.

Reports of the movie’s development came just days after Mulroney, 61, told the New York Post in an article published July 25 that “there is talk of a sequel” to My Best Friend’s Wedding.
“I know nothing about it,” he said at the time. “Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”
My Best Friend’s Wedding follows Roberts’ Jules and Mulroney’s Michael, two best friends whose relationship is tested when Jules learns Michael is about to get married. Jules attempts to break up Michael’s wedding to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) after she realizes she is in love with him. The movie also starred Rupert Everett, Carrie Preston and Philip Bosco.
Song broke out with her 2023 drama Past Lives, which follows a woman from Seoul, South Korea, who ponders her relationship with a childhood friend in the decades after her family immigrates to Canada and marries an American man in New York City.
The movie received nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 2024 Oscars. Song’s more recent film, Materialists, starred Dakota Johnson as a matchmaker who is caught between two potential romantic matches, her struggling actor ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans) and a wealthy man she meets at a wedding (Pedro Pascal).
Roberts’ latest movie After the Hunt is in select theaters Oct. 10, then everywhere Oct. 17.
