Kandi Burruss is grateful to have written some bonafide hit songs.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the former Real Housewives of Atlanta star, 48, reflected on some of the hit songs she’s written for artists including TLC, Destiny’s Child, Pink and more as she was asked to name her “Mount Rushmore” of songs from throughout her career.
“‘Just Kickin’ It’ was big for Xscape, our first hit,” said Burruss, a member of the R&B girl group, before speaking on the iconic TLC hit she wrote. “Of course, ‘No Scrubs.’ ‘No Scrubs’ will forever be my gift that keeps on giving back to me. People keep sampling it.”
“‘Bills, Bills, Bills,’ because that one you can just break out in song at any given moment when people start talking about a bill,” she continued, naming Destiny’s Child’s 1999 single.
“For me, for my personal song, ‘Don’t Think I’m Not,’ you know? So, that one’s always a winner too,” added Burruss of her 2000 track.
She then recalled writing Pink’s debut single “There You Go” from her 2000 album Can’t Take Me Home. “That was her first single that blew up for her, and it’s so funny because it’s so different from her music that she did after,” said the artist.
“But I would love to work with her in her current era and the music that she does,” she added.
Looking forward, Burruss revealed who else she wants to write for today. “I’ve always wanted to work with Rihanna even though I know she hasn’t put out anything in a minute. Like, where’s the album? I would love to work with her and have her finally drop something new,” she said.
“And then I want to go back in with Beyoncé too. We’ve already worked together, obviously. But I would love to work with her in this current era,” noted Burruss.
Beyond songwriting and reality TV, the star is currently a producer on the new Broadway production of Othello starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. “The teenage version of me would be hitting flips right now because I went to a performing arts school,” she told ET.
“I was in the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta for musical theater and theater. And to see that I’ve made it to the point where I’ve produced four Broadway shows, and now the show that I’m producing, Othello, is breaking Broadway records and making history, like, it’s crazy,” said Burruss.
She added that her inner theater kid is “geeking all the way out” at her latest gig.
“I feel like I made, you know, obviously I made my mama proud. I made my brother, rest in peace, I know I made him proud. Teenage me is proud,” she said.
