Katy Perry’s experience of not attending the 2025 Met Gala may be out of this world.
Exactly three weeks after her controversial flight to space, the singer, 40, addressed rumors that she did in fact attend the Monday, May 5, fundraiser at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where the theme of the evening was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
“Couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour (see you in Houston tomorrow IRL‼️),” Perry wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, May 6. “P.s. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots but I’m praying for the rest of y’all.”
In her post, Perry showcased one of the AI-generated images that seemingly showed the former American Idol judge walking the carpet.

The 2025 Met Gala red carpet was rolled out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 5, in New York, for fashion’s biggest night. While the annual affair celebrates the spring 2025 costume exhibition and theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the Met Gala 2025 dress code is “Tailored for You.” Put simply, guests […]
While the images are fake and the “Fireworks” singer did not attend, Perry’s fiancé, Orlando Bloom, seemingly had some fun with the look by commenting, “Not once but twice 😂 still got it 🔥.”
Last year, Perry skipped the high-fashion event because she was in the recording studio. However, some fans were fooled into believing she was there due to AI deep fakes that spread across the internet. Perry later clarified in an Instagram post that she wasn’t actually present at the May 2024 gala.
“Couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work,” she captioned the AI images that appeared to show her on the red carpet.
Perry also shared a screenshot of a text thread with her mother, who was tricked by the photos too.
“Ha Feather! Didn’t know you went to the Met,” Perry’s mom wrote. “What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.”
Perry subsequently replied in a text, “Lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!”
Since her 2009 Met Gala debut, Perry has become one of the event’s biggest risk-takers, wearing everything from giant angel wings with her Versace gold chained minidress in 2018 to a Moschino chandelier ensemble with three layers of light-up candles over a bejeweled minidress in 2019.
That same year, she even dressed up in a hamburger costume designed by Moschino at a Met Gala afterparty.
Fashion aside, Perry’s rumored appearance at the Met Gala comes just three weeks after she traveled to space on an April 14 Blue Origin flight. After she and the rest of the all-female passengers received backlash for the journey, with some deeming it frivolous, Perry thanked her fans for their support via Instagram without directly referencing the flight.
“Please know I am OK, I have done a lot of work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me,” she wrote in the comments of a fan post. “My therapist said something years ago that has been a game changer, ‘no one can make you believe something about yourself that you don’t already believe about yourself’ and if I ever do have any feelings about it then it’s an opportunity to investigate the feeling underneath it.”
She added that when “the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human piñata,” she takes the negativity “with grace and send[s] them love” because she knows “so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.”
Perry concluded, “I’m on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall but … I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level UNLOCKS ♥️.”
