King Charles has made a statement after an Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff with more than 240 people aboard.
The King, 76, sent his sympathies in a statement shared to social media.
“My wife and I have been desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning. Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones,” King Charles said in a message shared on X on behalf of himself and his wife, Queen Camilla.
“I would like to pay a particular tribute to the heroic efforts of the emergency services and all those providing help and support at this most heartbreaking and traumatic time,” he added.
The British sovereign signed the message “Charles R,” using his regnal signature as King.
On Thursday, an Air India plane bound took off from Ahmedabad in western India and crashed minutes after takeoff.
The flight was bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, Air India has confirmed, and more than 240 people were onboard.

Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, director general of the directorate of civil aviation, told the Associated Press that the jet crashed into the residential area of Meghani Nagar five minutes after takeoff at 1:38 p.m., local time.
“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” Ahmedabad’s Commissioner G.S. Malik told the outlet. “Exact figures on casualties are being ascertained.”
