Leighton Meester is reacting to one of the most shocking scenes in Gossip Girl history.
Meester revisited her time on the CW show that ran for six seasons from 2007-2012 in a recent segment of Bustle’s “Icons Only” series, where stars guess their most memorable lines throughout their acting career.
The season 4, episode 17 scene in question shows Meester (who played Blair Waldorf) conversing with Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), who suggests the two should kiss to see if their relationship is strictly platonic or something more.
“Blair, we kept us a secret because we were afraid there was something more,” Dan says in the scene while walking closer to Blair.
“You need to go back to Brooklyn,” she replies.
“Not until I know for sure they were wrong … that there is nothing between us.”
“I can guarantee it,” she remarks. “But just so that you’re secure in that knowledge, what did you have in mind?”
“Just one kiss. Then I can know without a doubt,” Dan answers.
“I suppose that would work. One kiss that’s that,” Blair says, moments leading up to the kiss.
The clip pauses, and Meester has to guess what she says right before Dan and Blair lock lips. “He throws up? I don’t know what I say next. Let’s think of something. ‘Pucker up, cutie!’ Do I say that?” she answers correctly.
Meester then explained why she enjoyed the scene between the two characters, noting that they had good banter with each other.
“I did like that,” she said after watching the clip. “There was banter, but it was more like, they were keeping a secret but I don’t know – just – it’s cute.”
Like Meester, several fans in the comment section of the video also agreed with the adorable moment.
“of course leighton ships the superior couple,” one user wrote. Another added, “they were the most emotionally mature couple on the show.”
While — spoiler alert — Dan and Blair didn’t immediately explore their relationship further after that epic kiss moment, they did start dating in season 5. They broke off their relationship at the end of the season after Blair chooses to rekindle things with her ex-boyfriend Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick).

More recently, Meester has been working on her upcoming role in season 2 of Netflix’s Nobody Want This, a Netflix rom-com series starring her husband Adam Brody, and Kristen Bell, who narrated Gossip Girl. During her recent interview with Bustle published May 28, the mom of two explained why she’s more selective with the roles she takes on.
“It’s been really, very lovely to do a couple of shows where there is that feeling of: there could be a future there,” she said. “But I don’t know.”
“People are always asking, ‘What do you want to do? Where do you see yourself? Where do you want to go?’ And I’m like, I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s motherhood or this current situation or this business,” she added. You kind of can’t be like, ‘I know what I’m doing three years from now.’ I’m just, like, okay right now.”
Meester continued, “I just feel like being in the moment and figuring it out as I go along, because that’s all we can do, you know?”
