Liam Hemsworth Transforms into Geralt After Henry Cavill Exit in The Witcher Season 4: Watch the Trailer

Liam Hemsworth has entered the universe of The Witcher as an all-too-familiar face.

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Netflix unveiled the official trailer for season 4 of the fantasy series — the first offering after Hemsworth, 35, took on the role of Geralt of Rivia following the departure of series star Henry Cavill.

Now, fans can finally see Hemsworth’s Geralt in action… and there’s a lot of it.

The new season picks up right where things left off, with Geralt (Hemsworth), Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan) as they’re “separated by a raging war and countless enemies,” per a logline from the streamer. “As their paths diverge and their goals sharpen, they stumble on unexpected allies eager to join their journeys. And if they can accept these found families, they just might have a chance at reuniting for good.”

The trailer kicks off with an early glimpse of Geralt lifting a sword as he fights off massive creatures. “Geralt, you’ve spent a lifetime battling monsters and men. You’re entire being is dedicated to finding someone who you feel you failed,” Laurence Fishburne’s new character Regis apparently says.

In their attempts to “reclaim” Ciri, Geralt is joined by a crew of characters (“What a company I’ve ended up with,” he announces) as they embark on a journey together. The clip also gives fans a first look at an army being formed by Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu), while the rest of the trailer offers a glimpse of an all-out war — with Geralt wielding his sword, chopping off hands and dropping f-bombs in the process.

“The Witcher is in a state of flux. You are becoming something new,” a voice says during the trailer. “How will you be reborn?”

The role of Geralt has certainly been reborn with Hemsworth now at the helm, as he took over when Cavill, 42, simultaneously announced his exit and recasting on Instagram in 2022. Cavill played the character during the show’s first three seasons. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly recently that Cavill’s exit was a result of conversations that had been going on “for a while” behind the scenes.

As Hemsworth revealed to Tudum in an interview published on Thursday in correspondence with the trailer release, he was initially “pretty hesitant and unsure” about joining the cast mid-show. “It’s an odd thing to be asked to come in midway through a series like this and continue on as the lead character,” he said. “But, as a fan of the video game, I felt like I could do something cool with it.”

A slight difference between Hemsworth’s portrayal and Cavill’s is Geralt’s voice, series creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said.

“His voice, his tone, is slightly different, and he does have a little bit more humor,” she said. “Liam loves to curse, and we’ve brought cursing back.”

And as for how he’s connecting with his fellow Witcher stars, Hemsworth had nice things to say. “From the cast to the crew, everyone was so welcoming,” Hemsworth said. “They put a lot of my fears and nerves at ease by being welcoming and also excited to have me there and continue on this journey.”

The Witcher season 4 premieres Oct. 30 on Netflix.
