Though exes Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber are no longer together, they are dedicated coparents of their two kids, Sasha and Kai Schreiber.
“We’re doing things very differently,” Naomi told Net-A-Porter in August 2019 about raising children with her ex. “I’m pretty proud of us, corny as that may sound. We’ve made it our absolute priority to be good and kind to each other and we’re absolutely committed to that.”
Naomi and Liev were together for more than a decade before announcing their split in September 2016.
“Over the past few months, we’ve come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple,” they said in a joint statement at the time.

“Kai was always who Kai is,” Liev said in a May 2025 interview with Variety. “But I suppose the most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns. To be honest with you, it didn’t feel like that big of a deal to me only because Kai had been so feminine for so long.”

When asked if he had any advice for parents of trans children, Liev candidly told Variety, “I don’t know the answer for your kid.”
“I don’t know what it’s like for you to be a trans dad,” he continued. “I don’t know how you were brought up. I don’t know what religion you encountered or what your spirituality is. And for me to tell you what I think about my kid feels like an overstep.”
Liev added, “I guess if I would say anything to someone who’s having trouble with their trans teen or their adolescent trans kid it’s ‘Teenagers are a headache. They’re hard.’ It doesn’t matter whether they’re trans or not because you’ll come out of this. But a trans teen is going to be a teen. They’re such a pain so much of the time, and Kai is as feisty and outspoken as they come.”

Naomi explained how she and and Liev have maintained a healthy coparenting relationship for the sake of their kids.
“Having a good relationship has always been our endgame, and we’ve put a lot of energy and effort into making that so,” she told The Sunday Times in December 2019. “It’s not always a cakewalk, as they say in America. But it makes complete sense that it is an absolute priority, because it really matters to the children. You can see how there are so many things that can make a kid feel anxious, and knowing that their parents can be in the same room and joyfully, it means a lot to them.”
Naomi Watts on Taking the Good With the Bad

“There are good days and bad days. So, that’s pretty much all I’ll say.”
