Madeline Brewer Doesn’t Know How ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Ends Because Last Pages Were Redacted

Not even the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale knows how the show will end.

Madeline Brewer was asked about the upcoming series finale during the Wednesday, April 30, episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, to which she replied, “The last 15 pages of The Handmaid’s Tale [finale script] was redacted so I actually don’t know how it ends.”

Brewer, 33, is “waiting to see” what happens “just like everyone else.” The actress isn’t the first one to reveal she has been kept in the dark about the outcome of the hit Hulu series.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where low fertility rates have resulted in women being forcefully assigned to men for the sole purpose of bearing children. In addition to Brewer, Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella and Amanda Brugel have led the cast since the show’s premiere.

While speaking to Us Weekly last month, Kristen Gutoskie, who played Beth, said she knows “nothing,” adding, “It’s all a mystery. We’re gonna all be watching it at the same time.” Wiley, 37, has played Moira since the series premiered but also has “not seen a thing” yet.

The same went for Timothy Simons, who has a mystery role in the show’s upcoming season. “I haven’t read it. I wasn’t allowed to read it,” he revealed. “I haven’t seen it.”

Despite The Handmaid’s Tale coming to an end, the journey isn’t over. Hulu has officially picked up The Testaments spinoff, which may or may not include cameos from our favorite Handmaid’s Tale stars.

Wiley confirmed to Us that she wouldn’t reprise her role. “Probably not. I feel like I’ve had enough of Margaret Atwood’s trauma for a while,” she said about how she is “looking at another direction” when it came to future projects. “It’s bittersweet.”

Wiley continued: “I have never had the pleasure of playing a character for eight years and never had a character whose journey that I’ve been able to tell this story from the beginning all the way to the end. I’ll miss my cast mates very, very much. But I’ll also miss her [Moira]. I’ll miss the fictional character of Moira that I was able to create.”

Fagbenle, 44, meanwhile, joked he would consider coming back as Luke “if they ask really nicely.” As for Sam Jaeger, he is on the edge of his seat waiting to see if Mark will have more scenes in the spinoff.

“It was so funny when I learned how they were creating The Testaments. Originally in the book, it was so much further in the future,” he noted to Us. “I just assumed that it was different, and they would have a different actor come in. But it doesn’t seem they’ve shifted things in a way.”

Jaeger added: “So if they want me back, I would probably willingly do that. It’s such a great group of people. And to see the next iteration — I’m excited to see it as just a fan.”

The Handmaid’s Tale airs Tuesdays and new episodes will be streaming on Hulu.
