Madonna is paying homage to her late mother with her latest look.
On Sunday, May 18, the pop icon, 66, posted photos on her Instagram Stories of her dressing up as her mother, Madonna Louise, wearing her hair in dark brown curls in her honor.
In the first image shared, Madonna sported a short, dark brown ‘do — or donned a wig in a similar style — as she posed with her head to the side. “I missed my Mother so I channeled her…,” she wrote over the photo. The singer also wore a black printed hoodie and a stack of embellished cross necklaces in the subsequent frames.
Madonna’s mother died from breast cancer in 1963 when she was just 30; the singer was five years old at the time. Her parents welcomed five children together, including their eldest, Anthony, who died in February 2023. Madonna’s father, Silvio Ciccone, later remarried their housekeeper, Joan.
Speaking about her mother’s death in 1985, Madonna told TIME, “I knew she was sick for a long time with breast cancer, so she was very weak, but she would continue to go on and do the things she had to do. I knew she was very fragile.”
“I know she tried to keep her feelings inside, her fear inside, and not let us know. She never complained … that was the turning point,” she added to the outlet. “I think that made me grow up fast. I knew I could be either sad and weak and not in control or I could just take control and say it’s going to get better.”
Meanwhile, in archival clips and audio featured in the Sky documentary Becoming Madonna, which aired in January the Queen of Pop, said losing her mom was like “a part of my heart was ripped out.”
“I was forced to grow up fast and understand my mother’s death, to understand the psychological, all things that were going on. It was too much for a child I think,” she said, adding that she felt an “emptiness” afterward.

Madonna’s latest post comes days after she celebrated Mother’s Day with five of her six children, Lourdes, Rocco, David, Mercy, and twins Stella and Estere.
The singer recapped the day in an Instagram post on May 12. “I spent Mother’s Day weekend with 5 of my 6 children. Sunshine, laughter, horseback riding. soccer, and the sound of music!” she wrote. “The best gift they gave me was the gift of not arguing and being loving to one another.🩷🌸🫂 When you raise children to be unique and opinionated, you also create your own debate team !!!”
