A man took to Reddit to share his frustration that his roommate eats all his food without asking
He said he didn’t mind the money he’s lost on the food, just more that his roommate doesn’t ask
People on Reddit advised him to set firm boundaries around his food
Nearly everyone has experienced roommate troubles at some point, including one Redditor who says his roommate keeps eating his food without asking.
“It started with small things like grabbing a snack or using a little bit of milk but now it’s gotten to the point where full meals or groceries I bought are gone before I even get to touch them, I’ve tried dropping hints and even labeling some of my food, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference,” the man shares in his post.
The man notes that it’s not “just about the money,” although he acknowledges that it “adds up,” but rather “the disrespect of not asking first.”
“I budget carefully for my groceries and it’s frustrating to open the fridge and realize what I planned for dinner is gone,” he adds. “When I bring it up they brush it off like it’s no big deal or say they’ll replace it but half the time they don’t.”
Still, the man questions if he is “overreacting for being this annoyed about it” or if it’s a “valid reason to be upset with my roommate?”

People in the comments section validated his frustrations, encouraging the man to have a serious conversation with his roommate about boundaries.
“You have very valid reasons to be upset. The first thing I’d do it’s just straight up talk to the roommate and ask them to not touch your food. Hints don’t work, so you have to be straight forward,” one person wrote. “If that doesn’t work, I’d get one of those boxes with a lock for the fridge and the pantry to keep my groceries in there, because it’s indeed a big deal: you budget carefully for your groceries and your roommate eats all of your food, not replacing it half of the times.”
Another person added, “Been there done that. I bought a tiny fridge and kept my food in my room. You can get one at Walmart or Lowes.”
