Man Uses Wedding Savings to Buy Himself a New Gaming Console Without Asking Fiancée

NEED TO KNOW

  • A couple created a joint account to save up for their 2026 wedding
  • However, the woman recently realized that a large sum of money was “missing”
  • She discovered that her fiancé used their savings to buy a gaming console

Saving for a wedding can take a lot of time and discipline. One bride had a recent setback in her savings journey after her fiancé dipped into their shared account to buy himself a pricey gift.

On Reddit, the 27-year-old woman shared that she and her 29-year-old fiancé are getting married next year and have “been saving for the wedding together in a shared account.”

However, recently, the woman “noticed almost $800 missing” from their joint account.

When she asked her fiancé about it, he “sheepishly admitted he used it to buy the new gaming console plus a bunch of accessories because he ‘deserved it after a stressful month.’ ”

“I was furious because that’s money we agreed was for the wedding, not random splurges,” she writes. “He says I’m overreacting because ‘it’s not like the money is gone forever’ and that he’ll pay it back eventually.”

However, she explained that they are currently living “paycheck to paycheck, so that $800 is a huge chunk.”

“I told him it feels like he prioritized video games over our future, and now he’s sulking saying I’m blowing it out of proportion,” the woman ends, asking fellow Redditors if she was “overreacting.”

People in the comments section called his behavior a “huge red flag,” noting that he prioritized his desires over their shared financial goals.

“They have already totally betrayed your trust and cheated on you financially. I’d walk away if I were you. He valued the instant gratification of a new toy over your entire future together.. That is a huge red flag,” one person wrote.

“He just saved you a ton of money, because someone who would do this unilaterally is not someone you want to marry,” another person added. “Split the savings (make sure that $800 is counted as paid to him already) and use your part to move out. This relationship is not ready for marriage.”

A third person chimed in, “My wife and I ask each other permission before spending more than $50 at once, and we are not paycheck to paycheck. $800 without even discussing is unthinkable and wildly irresponsible. This is even before the fact that the money was earmarked for your wedding. He can’t just spend nearly $1000 every time he gets stressed. If he’s going to be married he has to think about the impact on you when he makes most decisions, let alone big ones like this.”
