Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is revealing his “key” relationship advice for keeping love alive.
The Jersey Shore star — who has been married to his college sweetheart, Lauren Sorrentino, since 2018 — recently caught up with PEOPLE on the 2025 MTV VMAs Red Carpet in N.Y.C. During the conversation, Mike, 43, shared his two biggest pieces of romantic wisdom.
“Communication is key. That’s number one,” he said.
He added, “Number two, if you guys get into a fight, always try to be the first to apologize and try not to go to bed mad. You know, every now and then it happens, but always remember that your husband and wife and that you love each other.”
Mike then motioned to Lauren, who accompanied him to the star-studded event.
“How could you stay mad at that after three kids looking like that? She looks gorgeous,” he exclaimed.
Lauren, 40, then chimed in with her own thoughts on what makes their relationship work after all these years.
“Mike has the patience of a saint,” she said, adding, “And having three small children, it really tests, you know, all of that kind of stuff. So he’s really been the best dad, and that makes me fall in love with him even more as we get older.”

Mike and Lauren met as students at Brookdale Community College in 2005.
“My girlfriend is my college sweetheart — we met each other when she was probably 19 and I was 22 years old,” he told PEOPLE in 2018. “We met in community college in math class.”
The couple dated until Mike joined the cast of The Jersey Shore in 2009, at which point they decided to take a break and go their separate ways. They ultimately rekindled their offscreen romance in 2013 once the show had ended.
Mike asked Lauren to marry him on Valentine’s Day 2018, while they were on vacation in Miami. The proposal was captured on camera for Jersey Shore: Family Vacation.
Mike’s costars helped him plan the emotional proposal, decorating the interior and backyard of their vacation home. Before he got down on one knee, the couple watched a slideshow that began with a heart-wrenching declaration.
“I fell in love with you because you loved me when I couldn’t even love myself,” Mike wrote.
He added, “You’re my best friend, my college sweetheart, my better half. You make me a better person. Please make me the happiest man on earth. Will you please marry me?”
