There have been two reactions to a photo of Miley Cyrus and Patrick Schwarzenegger at the 2025 Met Gala — “OMG” and “Wait, they dated?”
In a picture obtained by Us Weekly from the Monday, May 5, fundraiser in New York City, Cyrus, 32, is glowing as she seemingly walks past Schwarzenegger, 31, without acknowledging him. Schwarzenegger, for his part, is all smiles — looking quite happy to see his ex. The run-in (or lack thereof) comes a decade after the twosome dated. Back then, Patrick was simply known as the son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver as he studied business and theater at the University of Southern California. Cyrus, meanwhile, was in her Bangerz era — IYKYK.
Days away from her 22nd birthday, Cyrus was first spotted with Patrick, then 21, in November 2014, making out at a USC Trojans football game. The outing was one of the more wholesome for Cyrus as she shed her Hannah Montana image and briefly opted for USC merch and channeled her inner Friday Night Lights.
While the twosome were hot and heavy for a few months, Patrick reminded Us that he was just a boy in college when he was spotted getting a little too cozy with another woman (body shots and all!) on spring break in Mexico in March 2015. He denied anything happened at the time.
“Omg. It’s one of my best friends girlfriend,” he tweeted. “Would NEVER do anything against my GF…. Girls have guy friends and guys have friends that are girls.”
Cyrus subsequently took to the app (back then, she was much more vocal on social media) and shared a Photoshopped pic of her kissing her then-bestie and assistant Cheyne Thomas. The caption added fuel to the fire — and just overall confusion.
“da most biewteous thang in da whole wide world iz friendship. yiew choose dem outta all da billion trillion and beyond dey are da onez dat days seem toooo short with….” she posted at the time. “Yiew wish dey could just go on foreva (that’s why sometimes yiew skip da sleepin part) i am layin in da gra$$ lookin up at all da clouds and tryin to even get a lil solaaaa gaze action jusss bein still … & bein thankful. biewty is all around us and we izzzz so lucky to be on dis planet. (I mean seriously wtf are the chances we all meet da onez we love) Feeling supaaaa blisssssed or maybe I’m juzzzz stone.”

As Patrick’s Cabo photos continued to make waves, Cyrus’ fans were out for blood — causing his sister Katherine Schwarzenegger to step in.
“A lot of you guys spreading hate need Jesus in your lives ASAP ???” she tweeted, adding in a separate reply to a Smiler, “Ever heard of spring break?!”
Despite the controversy, Patrick and Cyrus put on a united front, stepping out for sushi in Los Angeles after he returned home from his trip.
