A 24-year-old mom and her 9-year-old son are dead after a rollover crash in West Virginia earlier this week.
Keyonna Norman was driving with her son Kingston when her vehicle went off state route 49 in Mingo County, MetroNews, ABC affiliate WCHS and NBC affiliate WSAZ reported. When the vehicle went off the roadway, it rolled down a hillside before landing on nearby railroad tracks.
According to authorities, neither Keyonna or her son were wearing seatbelts, reported WCHS and MetroNews.
Officials said that they believe the incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, June 17, but the victims were not discovered until the next morning.
“We aren’t sure if the rain Tuesday night had anything to do with it,” Mingo County Sheriff’s Chief Field Deputy Allen Mounts told CBS affiliate WOWK-TV.
MetroNews reported that Keyonne was ejected after the vehicle left the roadway while her son remained inside. They were both found dead at the scene, reported WOWK-TV.
The Mingo County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia Chief Medical Examiner did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
A family friend told WSAZ that the boy “had the biggest heart” and described his mother as a “go-getter.”
