A mom is concerned about how her neighbor’s habit of incessantly smoking cigarettes and weed is affecting her family.
The work-from-home mother of young kids explained on the community forum Mumsnet that her new neighbor in the apartment next to hers smokes on his balcony — and the smell is seeping into her family’s home.
“The smell is horrendous and the prevailing wind flows it straight in through our windows. It’s as if someone is smoking inside our apartment,” she wrote, adding that the neighbor smokes “every 2 to 3 hours.”
“I work from home so I notice every time he smokes,” she continued. “Last night, he lit up again at 11 p.m., so I had to shut our bedroom windows.”
The mom noted that the smoke and smell also enter her kids’ bedrooms.
“I feel I need to say something because it is vile and bad for our health. But I also appreciate that it’s his balcony and he can technically do what he wants on it,” she admitted, before asking for advice on what to do.

While many Mumsnet users said there’s nothing she can do since he’s smoking on his balcony, one reader was more optimistic, commenting, “Only thing you can do is make him aware, and if he’s a decent enough person, he’ll be a bit more considerate in the future.”
Another user suggested, ”Close your windows and pop in an air purifier.”
A third reader recommended they reach a compromise together, writing, “Why don’t you ask him to text you when he’s heading outside for a smoke. Then close the windows, wait 10 mins and all should be clear.”
