Monica Barbaro is gearing up to work with her boyfriend Andrew Garfield on a new movie from Challengers director Luca Guadagnino.
When Barbaro, 34, spoke with Entertainment Tonight at the Wednesday, June 11 premiere of her Netflix series FUBAR, the Oscar-nominated actress said she “can’t really say anything yet” about an upcoming movie titled Artificial, which both she and Garfield, 41, are reportedly circling roles in.
“I’m so excited to work with Luca, he’s just one of my favorite directors and I think everyone aspires to work with him so I’m excited about that,” Barbaro said, when asked what she can share about the movie. “I’m excited to work with the whole cast, it’s gonna be a great time,” she added with a laugh, after ET‘s reporter asked specifically if she was excited to work with Garfield.
Multiple outlets reported that Guadagnino, 53, was in talks to direct Artificial on June 3. While Variety described the movie as “a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence,” Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter added that the film is “a recounting of the tumultuous period at artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days.”
As those outlets reported, Anora‘s Yura Borisov is also in talks to star in the movie. Artificial will mark Garfield’s second consecutive movie with Queer filmmaker Guadagnino after he, Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri made the upcoming film After The Hunt, which releases in theaters Oct. 10.
A source first told PEOPLE that Garfield and Barbaro, who broke out with her role as Joan Baez in 2024’s A Complete Unknown, were dating in February. “They’ve been really lowkey and have been spending time together quietly,” that source said at the time.

While the couple have not yet publicly confirmed their relationship or appeared together on the red carpet, they have been spotted together several times, including for shopping trips in Malibu, Calif., a meetup after the Met Gala in May and Broadway date nights in New York City. Garfield, for his part, said as recently as October 2024 that he will never “speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever,” during an interview with Esquire.
On top of the second season of Barbaro’s FUBAR, she is next expected to appear on the big screen alongside Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo in the 2026 movie Crime 101. Garfield will next appear in After The Hunt and in The Magic Faraway Tree, the latter of which releases Dec. 19.
