A woman’s mother-in-law is planning a brief visit, but plans to bring a number of large items with her, including a litter box for her untrained puppy
In a post shared to Reddit, she writes that the mother-in-law also wants to bring “a play pen, a giant bed, a crate and more for the two-hour stay in our already crowded townhome”
She’s now asking the woman to leave the litter box outside, but her mother-in-law is making a “HUGE deal” out of it
A woman says her mother-in-law wants to come for a brief visit — and plans to bring a litter box for her untrained puppy.
In a post on Reddit, the woman writes, “My mother-in-law wants to bring a litter box for her dog who is not potty trained to pee and poop in while she’s here.”
In addition to the litter box, the mother-in-law also wants to bring “a play pen, a giant bed, a crate and more for the two-hour stay in our already crowded townhome.”
“We do not feel comfortable with letting the dog have the litter box in our home for several reasons, especially because we don’t want our dog to think that she can use the bathroom inside,” the woman writes in the post. “We told her that we’re happy to accommodate everything except the litter box needs to go on our patio.”
She continues: “we are already bending over backwards puppy proofing the house, deep cleaning, rearranging furniture, etc to prepare. i feel the least she can do is be okay with the litter box on the patio.”
But her mother-in-law is now “making a HUGE deal of it, saying she won’t come and she doesn’t feel welcome anymore because we told her that we didn’t want to argue about it and we felt as though our request was valid.”

Other Reddit users are urging the woman to stick to her guns, with one writing, “It’s your home. She’s a guest and that is asking too much. I am a huge dog lover (rescues too!) but I would never expect someone to accommodate my dogs in their home this way. In fact I would never expect someone to accommodate my dogs period. It’s nice if my dogs can come for a visit but I’d never push them on someone.”
Adds another commenter: “All of this for a 2 hour stay? Litter box can be outside. She needs to train her dog better.”
