My Dad Loves to Work Out, and This ‘Simple Yet Efficient’ Machine Is His Secret Over Buying a Costly Peloton

If there’s one thing to know about my dad, Patrick Baskette, it’s that he loves to workout. When I was younger, I didn’t appreciate his dedication. Mostly, I grumbled as he dragged my sister and me to the gym or on runs, while repeating phrases to us like “you’ll feel better after” and “it releases endorphins.” Now in my own workout era, I can confirm he was right all along. And his commitment to the grind, at 71 years old, has yet to wane.

Most recently, he’s begun to build up his at-home gym. But, instead of throwing down more than $1,000 for a Peloton bike, he opted for the cost-effective Yosuda Magnetic Rowing Machine from Amazon. The best-selling model uses a 12-pound magnetic flywheel to mimic rowing in water. Regular usage of the device comes with a myriad of benefits including full-body strength building and an increase in cardiovascular endurance. Better yet, my dad loved that he was able to assemble it by himself.

Keep reading to find out more reasons why my dad is so pleased with what he calls a “simple yet efficient” rowing machine.

Yosuda Magnetic Rowing Machine

At $200, this discounted rowing machine is astronomically less expensive than a Peloton bike or competing water rowers. But, according to my dad, this does not result in a lack of craftsmanship. The machine was actually suggested to him by his primary care physician, both of whom are delighted with its smart design and solid construction. “I’ve rowed for years at various gyms, and this one is every bit as [high] quality as the over-$1,000 machines,” says Baskette.

Unlike a water rowing machine, this magnetic variation uses internal magnets to create resistance instead of liquid. The design’s major selling point is that these machines are typically quieter than their water counterparts, as there’s no raucous sloshing noises.

Other notable aspects my dad relayed are the machine’s well-cushioned seat, ergonomic handles, straightforward monitoring screen, and easily adjustable tension control knob. All of this contributes to a comfortable yet challenging workout at home on the days he doesn’t go to the gym.

In terms of setup, it took my dad about an hour and a half to assemble it. He shared that the hardest part of this process was simply unpacking the parts from the box, as they’re packaged tightly so as not to break during shipping. The only downside to the process was that he had to utilize tools from his own kit in order to more efficiently tighten certain bolts. That being said, the instructions were so easy to follow that he assembled it perfectly in one go.
