Nearly 200,000 toy kitchen sets have been recalled after a toddler was strangled to death while using the children’s item.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced in a press release on July 31 that Backyard Kids, LLC, of Plano, Texas, is recalling 192,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens due to a potential “strangulation hazard.”
“Backyard Kids has voluntarily agreed to recall and provide free replacement hooks for all units, even though only about 400 of the 192,000 recalled units were sold to consumers by Backyard Kids,” the CPSC said, adding that “12 were sold in Canada.”
The company explained that the products pose “a risk of serious injury or death to young children who are climbing on the counter or crawling through the opening at the back of the play kitchens.”
“Children’s clothing can get caught on the hooks used to hold toy kitchen accessories, such as play pots and pans,” the CPSC continued.
The recall was issued after a 23-month-old boy died from asphyxiation in February 2023.
His shirt got caught on one of the toy set’s hooks while he was climbing through the opening at the back of the play kitchen, the CPSC said.
Originally manufactured by KidKraft, Inc. — which filed for bankruptcy in 2024 — the toy sets are designed for children 3 years or older, and they measure around 44 inches in length and 43 inches in height.
KidKraft is specifically recalling sets with the model number 53411, which can be found on a sticker on the back of the product, the company said in a statement on Facebook.
“Your safety is our first priority,” KidKraft wrote, adding: “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled play kitchens and contact Backyard Kids to receive replacement hooks.”

The play kitchens were sold online by KidKraft, Amazon and Walmart for between $120 and $270 from 2018 through July 2025.
Backyard Kids has agreed to provide free replacement hooks to consumers affected by the recall. They are being instructed to immediately stop using the play kitchens and to remove the original hooks.
