Newlyweds Survive Rollover and Semi-Truck Crash Less Than 48 Hours After Wedding: ‘I Thought He Was Dead’

A newlywed couple from Colorado survived a harrowing rollover car crash less than 48 hours after their wedding, according to multiple reports and a GoFundMe page established by friends of the family.

Zoe and Camron Thomas, both students at the University of Northern Colorado, were married on Jan. 2. Then, two days later around 11 a.m. local time in Kansas, their car hit a patch of black ice near Goodland while they were driving on Interstate 70 to see family, according to CBS News.

“[We] fishtailed into the median. Rolled one and a half times across to the other side — westbound I-70 — and were hit by a semi, which pushed us right back into the median,” Zoe said while speaking to 12 News.

“Once we stopped, Camron is unconscious,” she recalled to the outlet. “His seat is completely broken and and reclined back. And his head and neck were dangling off of the headrest. And I couldn’t hear him breathing. I thought he was dead.”

PEOPLE reached out to the Kansas Highway Patrol on Jan. 10 for further information but has not received an immediate response.

In a message on a GoFundMe, Zoe’s mother shared that both Zoe and Camron “will be okay.” However, she also noted that Zoe “has a concussion, pelvic fracture, and many bumps, bruises, and cuts,” and Camron “has a fracture in his lower vertebrae, two fractured neck vertebrae, and a serious concussion.”

She also shared that Zoe has been released from the hospital and Camron has since been transferred to a hospital in Denver for ongoing treatment. She also revealed that all of the couple’s wedding gifts — that were “so lovingly packed” into the car — were demolished in the crash.

The GoFundMe organizer stated that the page was not only set up to cover the immediate needs of the young couple (“phones, car, eyeglasses, etc.”) but is also designed to assist with “upcoming expenses (loss of income during recovery, medical bills, etc.) and the wedding gifts that can be replaced.”

“It’s very miraculous that we’re alive,” Zoe said while speaking to Colorado news outlet WECT 6. “The same people who saw me cry at my wedding [are doing] the exact same thing in the opposite circumstances —  like the happiest and saddest of times — people have just like been there for us, the same people.”

“I’m eager to go home and to make our home together. I’m very eager for that to happen,” she added in a statement to 12 News.
