The off-duty police officer who was fatally shot when a gunman opened fire on a New York City office building Monday, July 28, has been identified as Didarul Islam.
Islam was one of at least four people shot and killed when shots were fired at 345 Park Avenue, where Blackstone, the NFL and other companies are located. A fifth person is in critical condition. The gunman, later identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, also died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Islam was 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh and a 3 ½-year veteran with the NYPD, Mayor Eric Adams said during a press briefing at Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan on Monday evening. Islam, who lived in the Bronx, was a father of two, and his wife was pregnant with their third baby.
“He was doing what he does best … He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” Adams said of the slain officer, adding: “He loved this city. And everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith, and a person who believed in God and believed and living out the life of a godly person. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker.”
“Tonight, our city is reeling and four innocent families are mourning, including the family of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam who was killed at 345 Park Avenue,” Adams wrote on X. “He represented the best of New York City, an immigrant from Bangladesh who put on a uniform to protect and serve us all.”
The other victims were a male and two females. Their names have not been made public pending family notification. Four individuals were also treated at a local hospital for injuries they sustained while trying to flee the scene.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch spoke further about Islam at the press briefing and stated: “He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He died a hero.”
She also shared additional details of the incident. She said Tamura entered through the lobby and “immediately opened fire on an NYPD officer.” He then made his way through the building, firing shots at additional victims.
“We believe this to be a lone shooter and there is no active threat to the public,” Tisch added. She noted that Tamura has a “documented” history with mental health.
