Fontanini Foods recalled certain pork sausage items after two consumer complaints of “clear, hard plastic found in the sausage product”

Thousands of pounds of pork breakfast sausage have been recalled due to potential plastic contamination.
Illinois company Fontanini Foods LLC recalled approximately 2,320 pounds of raw, frozen pork breakfast sausage due to potential contamination with foreign material, per a Sept. 25 announcement shared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
According to the announcement, the issue was discovered when Fontanini Foods received two consumer complaints about “clear, hard plastic found in the sausage product,” prompting the recall.
Affected items include 10-lb. cardboard box cases of Fontanini Pork Sausage Links.
The recalled products have “ITEM 393” printed on the box and a shipping label that says, “PACKED ON 06/23/2026.”
The USDA mark of inspection on the boxes containing the affected items also has the establishment number “EST. 6944.”

The USDA classified the recall as Class I, meaning it involves a “high or medium risk.”
The Class I categorization indicates “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” per the USDA.
The announcement said, “there have been no confirmed reports of injury or adverse reactions due to consumption of” the pork breakfast sausage items.
The agency added that those concerned about injury should contact a healthcare provider.
Per the announcement, the items were produced on June 23, 2026 and sent to distributors in California, Florida, Michigan and Nevada for foodservice establishments like restaurants.
“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in food service and restaurant freezers,” the agency said in the announcement.
It added that food service establishments should not serve the affected items, and should instead discard them or return them.
“This product was sold exclusively to foodservice operators and was not available for direct purchase by consumers in retail stores,” a Fontanini Foods spokesperson told PEOPLE in an emailed statement. “All foodservice customers that received the affected product have been directly notified.”
The FSIS said it conducts checks to ensure that the recalling company notifies its customers of the recall and that it takes steps to make sure that products are no longer available to customers.
The agency said that it will add any retail locations it links to the recall on its website.
In a separate recent Class I recall, Star Meat Delivery Inc. recalled approximately 167,639 pounds of raw pork, beef and goat items due to production without inspection, per an FSIS announcement on Sept. 22.
The FSIS said the recalled items had a “false USDA mark of inspection.”
“The products subject to recall bear false marks of inspection with establishment number ‘EST. 1363,’ which does not have a federal grant of inspection,” the agency said. “Any product bearing the false establishment number ‘EST. 1363’ should be considered misbranded and unsafe to eat.”
No confirmed illnesses or injuries have been reported.
The products were delivered in bulk under the A&D Foods label.
A&D Foods told PEOPLE in an emailed statement that it notified customers to remove recalled items once it learned of Star Meat Delivery Inc.’s recall.
“We have been in direct communication with our customers and are assisting them with the appropriate recall procedures,” the company said.
