People Are Dyeing Marshmallows This Easter amid Record-High Egg Prices — and There’s Now a $2 Kit For It

With Easter approaching and egg prices still soaring, one of the holiday’s staple activities, egg dyeing, has never been pricier. But a cheaper solution has emerged — and a sweet one at that.

Users across Instagram and TikTok have turned to dyeing marshmallows as a replacement for the family-favorite Easter fun, while articles on HGTV, Better Homes & Gardens and more aim to help people get their substitute treats just right.

Now, Jet-Puffed is offering an all-in-one kit for a one-stop marshmallow-decorating shop. The Kraft Heinz-owned brand has released a kit complete with the works: tongs, food coloring, fine-tipped decorating tools and, of course, a bag of “farm fresh” egg-sized marshmallows to use them on.

The Jet-Puffed Dip & Decorate Dozen kit comes with an egg carton and a bag of Jet-Puffed Jumbo Extra Large Marshmallows to fill each slot with, because at approximately 2 inches in both length and width, the marshmallows are about the same size as jumbo eggs.

The kit i only available for purchase at Walmart.com, and at $1.99, it comes in at less than a third of the average price of a cartoon of eggs.

In March, the average price for a dozen Grade A large eggs rose to $6.23 — a record high — according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, at just under $2, the marshmallow-decorating kit is roughly the cost of the same dozen in January 2022, before egg prices began steadily increasing (and later, spiking).

In other words, it’s a pretty cost-effective solution.

“Have your Easter egg decorating plans been cracked by soaring egg prices? This year, the best dozen on the table is from Jet-Puffed,” a press release for the kit reads, adding that the marshmallow brand “is coming to the rescue of families everywhere” with the sweet solution.

And, the brand suggests, the kit is not only cost-effective. It also offers an easier, less-fuss alternative to the traditional Easter egg-dyeing.

Unlike the pricier alternative, the jumbo-sized s’mores staples not hold their shape but also soak up food coloring easier than an egg shell, and reduce the amount of necessary steps — no boiling required.

“We saw so many families turning to social media for egg decorating hacks, and as a brand that has served families for over 65 years, it sparked the idea to use our Jumbo Marshmallows as the ultimate solution for fans,” Jet-Puffed told PEOPLE in a statement.

Jet-Puffed says that the new kit “is fun, festive and totally unique, and for $2, it’s a sweet, squishy, and budget-friendly way to celebrate together this holiday.”
